WEST CHEF DE CUISINE it as they would in Hebrew." Broza is presently living just outside of Tenafly, N.J. "I love it there," he said. Despite his enthusiasm, Broza's American tour hasn't been easy. Two of his concerts, one in Champaign, Ill. and the other in Columbus, Ohio were plagued by bomb threats. These were especial- ly disturbing to Broza, who chooses to stay out of politics. "I don't want politics to get in the way of my music," he says. "I don't regard my music as political at all. It's folk rock with an edge to it. I have nothing to do with politics really." But that isn't entirely true. While still in Israel, Broza attended the "Yesh Gvul" ral- ly held in Achziv to raise money to help people refusing army service to Lebanon. He is also actively involved with Neve Shalom (Oasis for Peace), an Arab-Jewish village bordering the West Bank that serves as a visible model of cooperation and coexistance. Along with his records and tapes, Broza distributes pamphlets on Neve Shalom at his concerts around the country. But he has emphasized that it is peace more than politics in which he is interested. As for his three years in America, Broza never ex- pected his latest album to be so much work. And the com- petition in America was like- ly greater than he expected and certainly greater than anything he encountered in Israel. "It's a cruel business," says Broza, putting his guitar down for the first time during the interview. "You might give everything you have for a project and never see the results. There's not a lot of space at the top and everybody wants to get there. At some point in Israel I got to the top. I would like to get to such a satisfactory point here. I don't stand out . . . yet." In spite of the hard work, Broza has no regrets. "I've had no disappointments," he says, looking around for some wood to knock on. "I only hope for good stuff. I haven't lost hope for a moment in my life. But it's a very com- petitive place, this America." While Broza has cut down on his concert appearances in order to concentrate on his new album, he hasn't ended his tour completely. Broza will return to Michigan for a solo concert at Temple Israel, co-sponsored by Young Judea on March 13 at 7:30 p.m. Ad- mission is free.
