His bar mitzvah was at Young Israel of Oak-Woods, where he is an active member and past president. He was a member of the first graduating class of Akiva Hebrew Day School in 1974. As a child and an adult, Torgow was extremely close to his grandfather, Manuel Merzon, who recently died. "He was my mentor — professionally, personally and religiously. He was one of the first Jewish lawyers (among his peers) to wear a yarmulke in court, recalls Torgow. After high school Torgow spent a year in Israel studying Talmud. During his college years at Yeshiva University, he was one of ten students chosen yearly to teach Jewish studies in Melbourne, Australia for three months. "It was a marvelous experience." From 1977-1979 he was the Central East Regional director of National Conference of Synagogue Youth. During law school, he began working in the law firm of Zeff & Zeff. There he met his future partner, Paul Swanson of Grosse Pointe Shores. He is now with his own firm Swanson & Torgow, where his grandfather was of counsel. On Shabbat, Torgow spends time with his family and friends studying and praying. He believes home and school should be filled with Jewish traditions. "A stronger background, a stronger faith is more hopeful for the continuity of successive generations."
