Cancels Visit

Amsterdam — Dutch Min-
ister of Defense Willem
Frederik van Eekelen last
week cancelled his visit to
Israel, apparently in protest
of Israel's handling of Pales-
tinian unrest in the Gaza
Strip and West Bank.
He was to have met in the
near future with his Israeli
counterpart, Yitzhak Rabin.
Van Eekelen's announce-
ment follows the statement
by Dutch Foreign Minister
Hans van den Broek that
Premier Ruud Lubbers has
not decided whether to call
off his visit to Israel, sched-
led for May.

U.S. Firm, Israel
Agree On Deal

Tel Aviv — The General
Dynamics Corp. of the United
States agreed last Thursday
to purchase $800 million
worth of Israeli military
goods. The purchase is in par-
tial exchange for General
Dynamics' multi-billion-
dollar sale of F-16C jet
fighters to the Israeli Air
Force.
According to Israel's
Defense Ministry, the agree-
ment will result in increased
orders from Israel's defense
and electronics industries for
spare parts and avionics
systems. These will be incor-
porated into the U.S7built
planes. The F-16Cs will
replace the Israeli Lavi jet
fighter, which Israel discon-
tinued last year under
pressure from the United
States.
General Dynamics will
make half the purchases
within five years. The balance
will be purchased within
10-12 years. The ministry said
it expected further orders to
be placed for Israeli-
manufactured engines for the
jet. These would increase the
value of the deal to $1 billion.
