NOONAN PONTIAC ANNOUNCES .. .

Purim is intended to help us overcome our illusions.

Recognizing, Unmasking
The Hamans Of Our Day

RABBI IRWIN GRONER

Special to The Jewish News

his week, Jews world-
wide will celebrate the
holiday of Purim.
Although Purim is a complex
holiday, with contradictory
elements, I believe Purim is
the festival of illusion. The
distinctive practice of Purim
is wearing false identities,
masquerading in costume.
Purim is intended to help us
overcome illusions, and
thereby to grasp reality more
clearly.
The story of Esther con-
fronts the illusion that a Jew
can escape or reject Jewish
identity. As the events of the
Megillah unfold, we witness
Mordechai masking his full
Jewish identity as he sits in
the courtyard of the king.
Esther, at Mordechai's re-
quest, conceals her
Jewishness. Note also that
Haman masks his anti-
Semitism until the propitious
moment. Yet, when events
reach a climax, all the masks
come off. Mordechai takes on
his full Jewish identity when
his people are endangered.
Esther does the same, and
declares her readiness to risk
her life.
Many Jewish generations
have had to deal with this il-
lusion. We note that
American Jewry, in recent
years, has cast aside its
earlier attempt to cover up its
identity. A generation or two
ago, American Jews were
engaged in an effort to con-
ceal that which made them

unique as Jews. For example,
it was then considered im-
proper, in sophisticated socie-
ty, to use a Yiddish phrase, as
through this somehow de-
meaned one's American
status.
But a new generation has
arisen in this land after the
Second World War, which has
witnessed the rebirth of the
State of Israel and the
bankrupt promises of
assimilation. This generation
now accepts Jewish identity
without apology. Identity
alone is not enough to sustain
us, but it is the first essential
step towards the upbuilding
of a vital Jewish community.
The second illusion was ex-
pressed by Haman, who
declared that difference was a
crime. He brought a charge
against the Jewish people to
King Ahasuerus, arguing
that "their ways are different
than ours." While Haman's
observation was correct, his
conclusion was false. He said
to the King "Don't let them
be! Don't allow them to live!"
In many epochs and lands,
to be different meant to incur
the wrath of the majority, to
be guilty of a most heinous
crime. This is why the Soviet
Union does not permit the
practice of Judaism, for a
totalitarian state has a fear of
difference. It cannot accept
the view that loyalties to
faith, heritage and tradition
are legitimate, other than
complete devotion to the
state.
The Jewish tradition
declares that God created a
world in which each of us is
different, because difference
has value. A society which
provides for diversity is
