couple of physicians to
reeducate, but most realistic
would be a job in a medical
related field . ."
In the recent years Soviet
medical schools utilize
American textbooks in basic
sciences and have an ex-
cellent exposure to patients in
overcrowded Soviet hospitals,
much more hands on practice
than many residency pro-
grams in this country.
Training of medical
students from the Soviet
Union on their admission to
medical schools in this coun-
try, to the best of my
knowledge, is accepted credit
for credit. My knowledge of
recognition of Jewish Russian
physicians in the Detroit area
is limited to my personal ac-
quaintances, but out of 18
physicians below the age of
50, 16 are licensed and are
practicing medicine now, 13 of
them are board certified or
eligible, one of them is an
assistant professor in Wayne
State University Medical
School and one is a chief of
service in a hospital .. .

A Time For
Cohesiveness

An attempt was made on
my life last week. An attempt
was also made on the lives of
a whole busload of innocent
civilians which included men,
women, babies and a good
many tourists. I was coming
back from a class in the Old
City on the –1 bus.
We had just left the Kotel
and were winding around
some dangerously steep
curves, when suddenly the
window exploded next to my
head and a sharp, pointed
rock came shooting by my
eyeball, filling up my mouth
and covering me with glass.
Everyone got down on the
floor, but not before at least
five or six more stones were
hurled with force on all sides
of the bus. There was special
attention given to the driver,
who had every window sur-
rounding him demolished .. .
One man had all of his
teeth knocked out and was
bleeding profusely, and an
older lady had been struck in
the back of the head and ap-
peared to be in shock.
Although in a daze, we helped
one another off the bus and
spent the next hour answer-
ing questions from reporters.
I explained that out of four
women in our apartment,
three have been stoned in the
past five days. How much
longer must we live in fear?
What new surprises are
waiting for us next? This is

not a subtle warning or re-
quest to discuss peace. They
fully intend to kill us.

I only experienced five
minutes of terror in almost a
year of living in Israel. The
Israeli soldiers experience
terror every day while trying
to keep the violence and
hatred confined to the insides
of the Arab camps and try to
keep this violence from
spreading to the center of the
city .. .
This is a time when the
Jewish people must share
both strength and
cohesiveness. Any weakness
or lack of cohesiveness on our
part only gives encourage-
ment to our enemy.

Chaim Herzog
Is Re-elected

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Knesset voted 82-2 in secret
ballot Tuesday to install
President Chaim Herzog for a
second five-year term. There
were 18 abstentions.
Informed of the results by
Knesset Speaker Shlomo
Hillel, Israel's Irish-born
chief of state pledged to
"work within the national
consensus for the peace and
unity of the nation."
He also said he would con-
tinue to support his wife,
Aura, in her efforts to
beautify Israel's landscape.
The first lady heads the
Council for a Beautiful Israel.
Herzog also said he and his
wife would work together "to
reveal the good in the coun-
try."
