Yeshiva U.
Takes Flak

New York (JTA) — Yeshiva
University was severely criti-
cized for allowing the rabbi
and cantor of the main
Moscow synagogue to study
'on campus here for three
months. U.S. Soviet Jewry ac-
tivists claimed the two men
are KGB agents.
The activists also maintain-
ed that the study program is
an insult to observant Soviet
Jews' sincere desire to study
Judaism, for which they are
frequently harassed and have
until recently been
imprisoned.
The Student Struggle for
Soviet Jewry urged the
university, with its own
record of involvement in the
Soviet Jewry movement, to
rescind its agreement to
teach Rabbi Adolf Shayevich,
50, and Cantor Vladimir
Pliss, 33. University presi-
dent Dr. Norman Lamm said
he received critical phone
calls from Morris Abram,
chairman of the National
Conference for Soviet Jewry,
and former refusenik Natan.
Sharansky.
But Yeshiva University
"will not cancel the arrange-
ment," said Rabbi Zevulun
Charlop, dean of the Rabbi
Isaac Elchanan Theological
Seminary (RIETS), the
university affiliate at which
the two men are studying.
He claimed the university
did not initiate the study pro-
gram, but agreed to host the
men "with our eyes open."
Arrangements and funding
for the study visit were made
by Rabbi Arthur Schneier,
president of the Appeal of
Conscience Foundation, an
interreligious organization
that has arranged for the
distribution of Jewish books
in the Soviet Union.

88 OF YOUR
FRIENDS
CAN'T BE WRONG.

That's the number of Michigan students who participated last year
in travel, study and work programs under the auspices of the
Israel Program Center. 23 of them are in Israel at this very moment.
And they're having a ball.

Don't take our word for it. Take theirs.

Kaplan Vows
Equal Funding

New York — Mendel
Kaplan, newly-elected chair-
man of the Jewish Agency's
board of governors, told
American Jewish leaders via
satellite hookup that future
Agency funding of Israeli in-
stitutions and services would
be determined without regard
to their religious affiliation
but on the need for the pro-
grams themselves.
"The Jewish Agency should
be blind to the religious
beliefs of those we support,"
Kaplan declared. "We should
base our priorities on need
alone."
