said Hostig. "He's just like
any other Nazi killer."
But Leon Zelig, 58, a resi-
dent of Los Angeles, said, "To
a degree, justice has been
done."
Zelig, who survived ten
months in Goerlitz, said Tan-
nenbaum had killed his
father, a Chasidic rabbi, with
a rubber hose two days before
Chanukah, 1944. After the
war, he searched for Tannen-
baum in Bucharest and New
York.
Now, more than four
decades after the war, Zelig
regrets that Tannenbaum had
not been apprehended sooner.
The sentiment of Jewish
leaders is very different from
these two survivors. Elan
Steinberg, executive director
of the World Jewish Congress,
said the Justice Department
had "handled a very sensitive
matter in a most fair and
equitable way, insuring that
justice was applied in a fair,
but proper manner."
In a prepared statement, of-
ficials of the Simon Wiesen-
thal Center for Holocaust
Studies in Los Angeles said
that justice "had been fur-
thered" by the decision to
strip Tannenbaum of his
United States' citizenship.
"Before Tannenbaum was a
criminal, he was a victim,"
said Rabbi Abraham Cooper,
the center's associate dean.
"As a result, the degree of his
culpability should never be
confused with those of Nazi
war criminals who created
and ran the planet of death on
which the Jews of Europe
were placed during the World
War Two Holocaust."
"But Jewish tradition and
American law are based on
the premise that every in-
dividual assumes respon-
sibility for his actions," said
Cooper. Therefore, for Cooper,
the resolution of the Tannen-
baum case "was a fully ap-
propriate action from a legal
and moral point of view."
