OPENING NIGHT for "Musical Monday Nights at the Kingsley," new series of live band entertainment hosted by the Kingsley Inn on Woodward, has been rescheduled for March 21. It'll open with the big band jazz sounds of Johnny Trudell and his 16-piece orchestra, plus featured guest star vocalist Orthea Barnes. Johnny and Phil Woolridge, long-time Detroit music pro- moter and personal manager for the Spinners, are produc- ing "Musical Monday Nights at the Kingsley," which had originally been planned to begin in mid-February. The doors will open at 7 p.m., with music at 7:30 til 11 p.m. . . . Admission is $7 per person and a cash bar available. Each week following the March 21 opening, the Mon-, day Night series will showcase top caliber musi- cians like Marcus Belgrave,' Brookeside Jazz Ensemble, George Benson and Austin-Moro. "Musical Monday Nights" will be in the Grand Ballroom of Kingsley, with its sunken marble dance floor and lavish appointments . . . This is the first time that Kingsley has offered a. program of live entertainment open to the public on a regular basis .. . The Grand Ballroom is part of a $5.5 million addition and renovation project dedicated last March . . . Kingsley Inn celebrates its 50th anniver- sary this year and has long been recognized as a hotel and dining tradition in the Detroit area. MIKE DEMBS is owner of the Video Zone in Warren, beginning its third year .. . Previous to his retail ex- perience, he wrote freelance film reviews for radio, newspaper and television. Mike writes a newsletter, with cartoons by employee Dave Davies, with customers depending on it as a way of telling if a movie is worth ren- ting or not . . . Some people say he is cutting his own throat by panning movies that he depends on for a liv- ing, but Mike believes a customer will trust you more if you save them money on a turkey. Sorry space doesn't allow all the reviews, but here's Mike's best and worst lists for 1987 . . . The best (in order of preference): 1. River's Edge, 2. Malewan, 3. Raising Arizona, 4. Tin Men, 5. Broadcast News, 6. Swimming lb Cam- bodia, 7. No Man's Land, 8. Radio Days, 9. The Un- touchables, 10. The Step- father . . . Runners Up: Jean De Florette, Hoosiers, Angel Heart, Light of Day, The Bedroom Window and Adven- tures in Babysitting! The worst, according to Mike, who writes: "It was so hard for me to come up with one worst movie of the year since there were so many losers in 1987. So what I've done is come up with the top ten number one worst movies of the year. Every movie on this list, in any other year, would be on the top. Beverly Hills Cop 2, Fatal Beauty, Flowers in The Attic, Hello Again, Like Father, Like Son, Innerspace, Ishtar, Jaws, The Revenge, The Princess Bride and Three Men And A Baby . . . Runners Up: Prince of Darkness, Ernest Goes To Camp, Superman 4, The Squeeze, Creepshow 2, My Demon Lover, Extreme Pre- judice, Over The Top and Critical Condition." RESTAURANT AND NITERY "Sleeper" . . . T.K.'s Dining and Spirits at former Dimitri's locale on Southfield and Ten Mile . . . vastly underrated . . . When the Dimitri's of Southfield sign is finally approved to come off the roof and replaced with the "T.K.'s Dining and Spirits" perhaps people will be con- vinced it is definitely under new ownership. Owner Tom Kelly is slowly but surely turning his T.K.'s ship around in the right direc- tion . . . It's getting to be the place to go for good food, music and dancing . . . (Ask folks like Toby and Manny Chudnow, Edee Moss, etc.) Now, with the Kevin Garber Trio for dancing Tuesday through Saturday in the lounge, T.K.'s is attaining a niche . . . Kevin is on the bass guitar and vocals (he's Bunker's son), Vince James on piano is Billy Rose's nephew, and Aaron Chick on drums round out a lot of good listening and dancing musical talent. LOOK FOR a name change at Restaurant Duglass in Farrell Shoppping Plaza on Southfield Rd. . . . Owner Douglas Grech is ex- pected to call it Brasserie Duglass. FOURTH ANNUAL Cuisine Extraordinare by Children's Hospital of Michigan Auxiliary is Feb. 28, 6 to 9 p.m. at the Rooster- tail on Jefferson . . . It'll feature international food prepared by members of the Chef de Cuisine Association, with 18 participating chefs delighting palates with hot and cold hors d'oeuvres. 4
