Stavish has never adver- tised. She relies exclusively on word-of-mouth for her busi- ness. When she came to Detroit, she met a group of educators who helped her to find work. It was a slow beginning. Then she started making telephone calls to or- ganizations, working through the phone book. Last year she performed before 90 different groups. She already has booked 50 ap- pearances this year. Stavish's mitzvah work in- cludes performing at minimal cost for senior citizens con- fined to homes. She says she charges retirement homes just enough to cover her own expenses. On the back burner are plans to pursue a doctorate in folklore. She earned her bachelor's degree in speech and theater at the Universi- ty of Illinois and a master's degree in speech and perfor- ming arts at Northeastern Il- linois University in Chicago. Meanwhile, she hopes to convince the community that storytelling is a viable me- dium for children, teens and adults. "Stories are love gifts," she explained. She is anxious to share tales from the Talmud, although Stavish hasn't found a group that desires such stories. But she is satisfied with the great response she gets to Eastern European folk tales of Chelm — a mythical town of fools — that was popularized by Nobel Laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer. Fortunately, Stavish said, she has never suffered a memory lapse during a per- formance. But it is not uncom- mon for a person in the au- dience to interrupt a tale. For that, Stavish said, she was
