But it's still an unforgettable experience,
whether your first trip or your 21st.

There's the architecture. Tel Aviv
sanas and felafel stands.
Kibbutzim and discos. The
warmth of a Ramla home and the
glow of Jerusalem stone at sunset.
Pioneers and poets from 120 lands.
blended into one nation.

There's the history, the incredible
history. Centuries old, yet only 40
years young.

And history is still being made.

Corinne Stavish

taught speech, storytelling
was a natural talent.
Stavish has never adver-
tised. She relies exclusively
on word-of-mouth for her busi-
ness. When she came to
Detroit, she met a group of
educators who helped her to
find work. It was a slow
beginning. Then she started
making telephone calls to or-
ganizations, working through
the phone book.
Last year she performed
before 90 different groups.
She already has booked 50 ap-
pearances this year.
Stavish's mitzvah work in-
cludes performing at minimal
cost for senior citizens con-
fined to homes. She says she
charges retirement homes
just enough to cover her own
expenses.
On the back burner are
plans to pursue a doctorate in
folklore. She earned her
bachelor's degree in speech
and theater at the Universi-
ty of Illinois and a master's
degree in speech and perfor-
ming arts at Northeastern Il-
linois University in Chicago.
Meanwhile, she hopes to
convince the community that
storytelling is a viable me-
dium for children, teens and
adults.
"Stories are love gifts," she
explained.
She is anxious to share
tales from the Talmud,
although Stavish hasn't
found a group that desires
such stories. But she is
satisfied with the great
response she gets to Eastern
European folk tales of Chelm
— a mythical town of fools —
that was popularized by
Nobel Laureate Isaac
Bashevis Singer.
Fortunately, Stavish said,
she has never suffered a
memory lapse during a per-
formance. But it is not uncom-
mon for a person in the au-
dience to interrupt a tale. For
that, Stavish said, she was
