Stavish often begins her
performances with a soothing
word or two from chidren's
author Shel Silverstein.
"If you are a dreamer, come
with me," she says while mo-
tioning the audience to follow
her.
When her character cries,
Stavish improvises tears.
When her character screams,
Stavish changes the tone of
her voice. If the character
runs, Stavish gets up from
her chair and jogs. And if her
character is short of breath,
she pants as she speaks.
"She's the best," Shaw said.
"You feel like you are with
her somewhere."
She always is well prepared.
In order to maintain a reper-
toire of 65 stories, Stavish has
read more than 200 tales. She
carefully rehearses each tale
before performing and never
tells a story she doesn't love.
She brings to stage a
microphone and a warm, com-
forting voice.
To learn a tale, Stavish
reads the original work
countless times before taping
it. She then listens to the tape
and, at the same time, studies
the words. Next, she begins to
memorize the tale.
She continues the pro-
cedure until the story is ready
for an audience. She practices
in front of a mirror, and
listens to her tapes while
driving her car.
It looks so easy.
"It's a gift," she said.
The concept of storytelling
came to Stavish while she
was leading improvisational
skits for children at parties.
She would tell a story and ask
the children to act it out.
"It is so basic," she said. "It
is the first form of com-
munication."
