Group Formed
To Push Peace

A

new group favoring
Middle East peace
talks surfaced in-
Washington last week — and
this group sports the names of
some major-league players in
the Jewish community.
Leaders of the U.S. Inter-
religious Committee for Peace
in the Middle East conducted
strategy sessions at the Na-
tional Cathedral, and then in-
troduced the group to the
media against the backdrop of
growing U.S. concern about
the stalled peace process in
that region of the world.
The group, Austin said, is
pursuing an "equitable" solu-
tion to the endless conflict in
the Middle East, based on
three principles. "The essence
of it is this," he said. "We
believe that peace and securi-
ty for Israel, and self-
determination for the Pales-
tinians, are mutually entwin-
ed, inseparable. There should
be a Middle East peace con-
ference as a way of getting to
the issue. And the U.S. gov-
ernment should pursue an ac-
tive peace policy to get parties
into negotiations."
Included as endorsers or
board members are Rabbi
Eugene Lipman, president of
the Central Conference of
American Rabbis, Rabbi
Alexander Schindler and
Albert Vorspan of the Union
of American Hebrew Con-
gregations, and Rabbi Arthur
Hertzberg.
The group also includes a
number of prominent Arab
Americans. "We understand
that some of our endorsers are
more pro-Palestinian, or pro-
Israel," Austin said. "But the
critical factor is that despite
this, they are willing to meet
in the middle and support the
basic principle of the group —
which is that the interests of
the Israelis and the Palesti-
nians are not mutually ex-
clusive."
