Jay Allen

Jay Allen

Jay W Allen, who followed
a family tradition of con-
gregational and community
involvements, died Feb. 14 at
age 57.
He was the past president of
Temple Beth El in which his
father, Sidney Allen was an
active office holder.
With his parents, Sidney
and Phyllis Allen, he was a
leading activist in the Allied
Jewish Campaign. His
mother often was a pianist
and soloist at Jewish Welfare
Federation and community
functions.
Mr. Allen was vice presi-
dent of Alexander and Alex-
ander of Michigan, an inter-
national insurance brokerage
firm. Following graduation
from the University of
Michigan, he rose to the vice
presidency of Allen In-
dustries, a company founded
by his grandfather and father.
After the family business was
sold, he went into the in-
surance business and spent
seven years with Alexander
and Alexander.
Among his community ac-
tivities, Mr. Allen was ad-
vance gift chairman of the
United foundation Torch
Drive and a past board
member of Sinai Hospital,
Jewish Home for the Aged,
University Liggett School,
Detroit Men's ORT, Traveler's
Aid Society and the Greater
Detroit Interfaith Round
Table. He also was a member
of the University of Michigan
President's Club.
He leaves his wife, Helen;
and two daughters, Lisa of
Seekonk, Mass., and Paula of
New York.

Norman Baker

Norman A. Baker, owner of
Baker Hardware and Electric
Co., died Feb. 3.
A former Detroiter, Mr.
Baker resided in Scottsdale,
Ariz., at the time of his death.
He was a member of B'nai
B'rith and the Masons.
During World War II, Mr.

Baker was a corporal, serving
with the U.S. Army in nor-
thern France, Ardennes,
Rhineland and central
Europe.
He is survived by his wife,
Betty A. (Kessler); a
daughter, Sheree A. "Tootsie"
of Scottsdale; three sons,
Gary D. of West Bloomfield,
Dr. Bruce H. of Grand Rapids
and Alan S. of Scottsdale; a
sister, Sarah Williams of
Detroit; five grandchildren,
nieces and nephews. Inter-
ment Scottsdale.

Barney
Hertzberg

Barney H. Hertzberg, a past
vice president of Guardian In-
dustries, died Feb. 10 at age
90.
Born in England, Mr. Hert-
zberg lived 72 years in
Detroit. He retired in 1987
after 49 years with the com-
pany. He was a member of
Temple Beth El, Perfection
Lodge of the Masons,
Knollwood Country Club. He
was a former board member
of the country club.
He leaves two sons, Dr.
Herbert of Guadalajara, Mex-
ico, and Stuart; a daughter,
Mrs. Harvey (Babs) Geller;
eight grandchildren an six
great-grandchildren.

Sadie Caminker

Sadie Caminker, a member
of Jewish women's organiza-
tions, died Feb. 9 at age 84.
Born in St. Louis, Mo., Mrs.
Caminker was a member of
the Temple Israel Sisterhood,
Hadassah, Sinai Hospital
Guild.
She leaves two sons, Jack
and Howard of Tucson, Ariz.;
three sisters, Mrs. Billie Iken,
Mrs. Ina Schudmak and Mrs.
Harry (Libby) Sr_yder, 11
grandchildren and six
great-grandcl- idren.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Rafi
Nelson, fonder, owner and
manager of the Rafi Nelson
Hiliday Village in the Taba
area near Eilat, died Feb. 6 at
age 58.

Sonya Levit

Sonya Levit, a founder of
Ramat Gan, Israel, founded
in 1920, died Feb. 11 at age
95.
Born in Latvia, Mrs. Levit
was a registered nurse. She
leaves two sons, Norman of
West Palm Beach, Fla., and S.
Daniel; and five
grandchildren.
