An Expatriate Takes
A Nostalgic Look

DANNY RASKIN

Local Columnist

I

t was with much more
than casual interest that
Milton Sosnick read The
Jewish News
article,
"Somewhere West of Wood-
ward" in the Jan. 8 issue .. .
The paper took a while get-
ting to him . . . and with
reason . . . He is stationed at
Clark Air Base, Republic of
the Philippines.
Milt read names of Lew
Weinstein, Harvey Gotliffe,
Lenny Salle and Eleanor
-Rudner . . . with much
memories . . . since all were
high school and college con-
temporaries of his . . . and all
left Detroit for California.
After teaching three years
at Grenada Hills for the
Department of Defense
Dependents School in 1964,
Milt has worked in Germany,
Spain, Japan and the Philip-
pines . . . "As with most of the
people Harvey Gotliffe and
Barbara Ratner mentioned, I
still have only fond memories
of growing up Jewish in
Detroit and its environs. The
family ties and the friend-
ships I made during my
youth, reinforced by such
`Jewish' experiences as AZA
and Adat Shalom youth
group, were and are still the
warmest and closest ones of
my life, except, of course, for
my family."
Mickey Solomon, who
graduated Central High with
Milt in 1953, used to teach
with him at Grenada Hills .. .
Milt writes that he has lost
track of Mickey.
IF YOU CAUGHT recent
Roland Optics column bit
about their spectacular office
expansion you would have
read that because of the new
space housing specialized
areas and examination rooms,
Dr. Mickey Weishaus had
"gone a full day without even
noticing that wife Phyllis had
worked that day" . : . This
must have come as a big sur-
prise to his real wife Katie,
and Phyllis' husband, Joe
Moore . . . Also in the Jan. 29
issue, Katie's sister Shelley
was still Shelley Kalisky .. .
However, a short 24 hours
later, she became Shelley
Gordon by marrying Goeffrey
Gordon the next day.
GET WELL wishes . . . to
Jimmy Launce, well-liked and
highly-respected radio per-
sonality . . . recovering at
home after quintuplet heart
bypass at Henry Ford
Hospital . . . Jimmy is ex-
pected back on the airwaves

in about six weeks says wife
Brigette.
TOMORROW NIGHT is
Detroit Reunion . . . "Putting
On The Ritz — Detroit Style"
by Valley Detroit Chapter,
City of Hope at Valley Hilton
Hotel in Sherman Oaks,
Calif.
PAM ZAGER, sophomore
at Southfield-Lathrup High,
is winner of the Hugh
O'Brien Youth Organization
award given for outstanding
leadership . . . She is the
daughter of Joan and Allan
Zager.
CONGRATS. . . . to wife
and husband Reva and
Sheldon Lederman . . . on
their birthdays . . . a day
apart . . . Reva is the one-
handed artist now taking
commissions for her Oriental
paintings.
IT'S REUNION time
again for Michiganders in
San Diego . . . fifth annual
Michigan party is Feb. 26, 8
to 1 at Hyatt Islandia Hotel
on Quivira Rd. . . . Last year,
600 MiChiganders gathered
and tasted Mackinac fudge
and traditional Sander's hot
fudge . . . for info, call chair-
man Howard Sattler,
619-281-6151.
PATRONS and benefactors
will be invited to a glittering
luncheon hosted by builder
Herman Frankel at his latest
luxury condominium develop-
ment, Woodcliff on the Lake
in West Bloomfield, March 9
. .. Guests, dining in rooms
overlooking the lake and
natural woodland setting, will
be treated to an informal
modeling from Donna
Karan's spring collection by
Saks Fifth Avenue.
It'll be a prelude to
"Fashion Jubilee '88" by the
Women's Association for
Detroit Symphony Orchestra,
celebrating its 60th anniver-
sary with a luncheon fashion
show March 16 at the Westin.
Benefactors will also be in-
vited to a cocktail reception
March 15, featuring Donna
Karan as honored guest.
For tickets, call Ida Kran-
dle, 851-4524 . . . ($25 regular
admission, $60 patrons and
$100 benefactors.)
CONGRATS. . . . to Betty
and Nate Barnett . . . on their
46th anniversary.
IS IT TRUE . . . that
Southfield-Lathrup High and
Southfield High are having
their ten-year reunions of
1978 classes on the same
date, Nov. 26? . . . If so, what
a shame since so many know
each other from both schools
. . . and would love to attend
the two.
