'TAKE TWO'
U.S. Vetoes
UN Resolution
United Nations — The
United States vetoed a
Security Council resolution
calling on Israel to abide by
the Fourth Geneva Conven-
tion of August 1949, which
relates to the protection of
civilian persons in time of
war.
The veto last week was the
second time in two weeks that
the United States exercised
its veto to quash a resolution
critical of Israel. The resolu-
tion, supported by the 14
other members of the Securi-
ty Council, followed a series of
meetings to consider
Secretary General Javier
Perez de Cuellar's report on
the situation in the Israeli-
administered territories. The
report is based on the find-
ings of Undersecretary
General Marrack Goulding,
who went on a fact-finding
mission to the territories.
Israeli Center
Party Formed
Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Center Party, the latest addi-
tion to Israel's crowded
political spectrum, held its
founding convention last
week. The new party, an
amalgam of three small fac-
tions that- never found their
way into the political main-
stream, is chaired by Amnon
Rubinstein, formerly of the
Shinui party.
Other charter members
come from the moribund In-
dependent Liberal Party and
the short-lived Liberal Center
Movement, founded last year
by two members of Likud's
Liberal wing: Leon (Arye)
Dulzin, former chairman of
the World Zionist Organiza-
tion-Jewish Agency Ex-
ecutive, and Shlomo Lahat,
the mayor of Tel Aviv. Lahat
has since returned to the
Likud fold.
Haredim Open
Blood Bank
Jerusalem — lb combat the
spread of AIDS, the ultra-
Orthodox Eda Haredit
organization has chosen 150
yeshivah students from
"pure, holy families" to
donate blood for the com-
munity's emergency use.
Israel's Health Ministry
called the "pure blood" dona-
tion project "nonsense." All
donated blood in Israel is
checked for AIDS antibodies,
the ministry said.
