ake love, not war,"

Avalon Hill's Game Com-
pany's latest boardgame,
"Quest for the Ideal Mate,"
now being released nation-
wide. The majority of the com-
pany's previous game offer-
ings bear names like "War at
Sea," "Ambush," Firepower"
and "Outdoor Survival." But
the overwhelmingly suc-
cessful debut of "Dr. Ruth's
Game of Good Sex" by
Avalon's sister company, Vic-
tory Games, Inc., bodes well
for the success of "Quest for
the Ideal Mate," a game
which aims to inform players
about their own "mateabili-
ty" while finding their ideal
mate within the playing
group.
According to the game's
creator, Florida-based hand-
writing analyst Shirl
Solomon, "One game of
`Quest for the Ideal Mate' will
tell you more about someone's
hidden character than a
dozen dates. It's a chance to
find out about your own
qualities and the qualities
you want in a mate in a nice
social setting."
The 56-year-old Solomon
has studied personality and
compatibility for 15 years,
primarily through hand-
writing analysis. Her research
and expertise in that area led
to the writing of three books,-
including one called Scryp-
tics, which deals with the
discovery and resolution of
personality conflicts through
the study of handwriting.
The popularity of that book,
says Solomon, led to the crea-
tion of "Quest for the Ideal
M ate."
"This game is like Scryp-
tics put into a gaming con-
text," comments Ibm Shaw,
executive vice president of
Avalon Hill. "It's an informa-
tional game, not a test of in-
telligence."
"Quest for the Ideal Mate"
is designed to be played by
three to 12 players, ideally a
mix of men and women. First,
each player fills out a con-
fidential "Ideal Mate Card,"
an inventory of the player's
expectations in a mate
relative to eight categories
such as personality, money,
brains and morals. Players ac-
cumulate points while mov-

Solomon stresses that
"Quest for the Ideal Mate"
appeals to players of various
ages, married couples as well
as singles.
"I've dealt with com-
patibility problems involving
people of all ages, from
children to octogenarians,"
says the former Philadelphia
welfare worker. "People have
one thing in common: the
need to develop a gratifying
one-on-one relationship. They
may deny or repress it, but
the need is there."

costs $24.)

markers" around a heart-
shaped path while answering
and asking questions relative
to these same categories. The
first player to achieve "wed-
ded bliss" wins the game.
Answering the game ques-
tions honestly is the key to
the success and the fun of the
game.
A typical question from the
personality category:
How do you like to eat your
meals?
A. one portion at a time
B. everything mixed to-
gether
C. sampling different por-
tions
D. whatever my fork
reaches the quickest.
There are no "correct"
answers to the questions.
They are designed only to
probe the personality of the
respondents.
Questions in other cate-
gories ask players to reveal
their feelings on matters
ranging from poor waitress
service to church appeals for
money to discovery of a
mate's affair.
"The game is fun, but it has
a tongue-in-cheek, serious
touch as the players discover
how they relate to each other,"
says Solomon, who asserts
