raison d'etere for the group
was self education.
That sentiment is still
valid. "I'm looking for the
spiritual side of Judaism,"
says Tali Mendelberg. `I want
to feel responsible for my own
Judaism. You don't need a
man to say Kiddish," says
Bernard. Blumenberg con-
curs. "It's nice to do a
ceremony with women. That's
what's special about it," she
says.
The Jewish Feminist
Group's observance of Rosh
Chodesh is a good introduc-
tion to the group, and what it
wishes to achieve. "I think
that our group can offer a
sense of religiosity and allow
women an outlet for express-
ing their feelings where
they'll be listened to," says
Santman. (The women have
taken the time to come up
with their own ceremony, ap-
propriate to the holiday. This
night they take turns reading
two stories, one about "The
Jewish Rip Van Winkle" and
the other a kind of reinter-
pretation explaining why the
moon is small and dark and
the sun is big and bright.
Informal, personal discus-
sion follows each story. The
shehechiyanu prayer of joy of
reaching a holiday is said
over the assembled women
because, as it is explained,
"we're a new group?' One
woman reads a lovely poem,
"Home for Winter" and
details its meaning for her.
There's laughter. Someone
wonders that kind of prayer
should be said over carob
chips. Fruit and wine are con-
sumed. There is some heart-
felt talk about the crisis in
Israel and recent events on
the U-M campus. Money is
collected fo the pushke.
The new moon is getting
older. The women talk out in-
to the darkness. They'll be
celebrating their day again
next month.

The month of Shevat will
conclude Wednesday evening
as Rosh Chodesh of the
month of Adar begins.

Racist Fliers
Draw Response

Racist posters aimed at
blacks and distributed on the
University of Michigan cam-
pus Feb. 1 have provoked
responses from six Ann Arbor
Jewish organizations, univer-
sity organizations and the
president of Black Student
Social Workers.
In a joint response, Jewish
organizations said they were
"outraged by the threatening
racist posters and pained that
black students were con-
fronted by such hatred."

The statement was signed
by the Jewish Cultural Socie-
ty, Cong. Beth Israel, Temple
Beth Emeth, Jewish Com-
munity Association, New
Jewish Agenda and the Hillel
Foundation.
