Bernie Smilovitz gives his son Zach a kiss as part of CF's 'Kiss Your
Baby' Campaign.

Smilovitz Heads Up
Cystic Fibrosis Drive

Bernie Smilovitz, WDIV-
TV4 sportscaster, and his son
Zach, are bringing a vital
health message to the people
of Michigan through the
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's
campaign, called "Kiss Your
Baby" which runs now
through March 15.
The purpose of the cam-
' paign is to alert parents to
the symptoms of cystic
fibrosis, in the hope that
early diagnosis and prompt
treatment will result.
One of the identifying
symptoms of cystic fibrosis is
a salty taste to the child's
skin, which can be detected
by kissing or tasting them on
the forehead. Other symp-

toms include: recurrent
wheezing, persistent cough-
ing and excess mucus,
pneumonia more than once
during childhood, excessive
appetite but poor weight
gain, enlargement of the
fingertips, and persistent
foul-smelling stools.
Parents should consult a
physician for referral to a CF
care center at Children's
hospital of Michigan or one of
its adult satellite centers at
Sinai, Harper, or Henry Ford
Hospitals for the proper sweat
test.
Cystic fibrosis is an in-
herited disease for which
there is no cure at the present
time.
