as the Michigan Jewish
History story relates.
Upon retirment from his
business, Helen's husband,
Max Dushkin, became a
buyer for the U.S. govern-
ment, "negotiating such pro-
jects as an electrical system
for the government of Turkey.
Helen also speaks with
pride about her husband's
role in Michigan industrial as
well as communal identifica-
tions. He died at age 87 in
1978.
ac-
many
Helen's
complishments included
reportorial work for the
Detroit News and the Jewish
Chronicle. She supervised
Gallup Polls. She had active
official roles in Hadassah,
American Jewish Congress,
National Council of Jewish
Women, Woman's Auxiliary of
the United Hebrew Schools,
Torch Drive, League of
Women's Voters and Eastern
Star.
That's a thumbnailed story
about a Woman of Valor who,
at 91, takes great pride in her
father's pioneering. It is ap-
parent in the Michigan
Jewish History story that she
is sort of a pioneer herself.
This story gives
background accounts of many
Michigan families who had
and continue to have
prominence.
These are among the
numerous details in pioneer-
ing that portray the roles of
peddlers, relationships with
farmers and the good will
that spelled out the devotions
that inspired newcomers to
this country.
The Helen Dushkin story in
the Michigan Jewish History
account, provides the record
of her life when the Sachses
moved to Detroit.
Helen was 13, and Eli
Sachse went into the slipper
manufacturing business. He
was active in the establish-
ment of the Jewish Home for
the Aged, then located on a
Winder Street. The Sachses
also assisted in the establish-
ment of a baby day nursery.
Eli became a member of
Cong. Shaarey Zedek and the
family continues its associa-
tion with it.
Eli Sachse was a treasurer
of the Detroit Jewish Na-
tional Fund Concil and
Helen's mother Fanny also
had a lifetime association
with the movement and its
Women's Auxiliary.
Helen Dushkin had a share
in the book review series con-
ducted here some years ago
out of which developed the
Jewish Book Fair in which
she still has an active role.
Many prominent per-
sonalities are in the cast of
characters of this family story
