Hebrew Free Loan
Shabbat Observed

The fifth annual bi-national
observance of Hebrew Free
Loan Sabbath will take place
on Shabbat Mishpatim, today
and Saturday.
Synagogues and temples
throughout the United States
and Canada are expected to
participate in this event, first
recognized by the Hebrew
Free Loan Association of San
Francisco in 1964 and
adopted by the Association of
Hebrew Free Loans (AHFL)
in 1982.
"Shabbat Mishpatim is
especially important to
Jewish free loan agencies,"
explains Julius Blackman,
AHFL president and ex-
ecutive director of the Hebrew
Free Loan Association of San
Francisco. "The Torah portion
on this particular Sabbath
specifically instructs Jews
`not to exact interest from the
needy.'
"It is this Biblical injunc-
tion which serves as the cor-
nerstone for today's free loan
agencies whose purpose is to
provide interest-free loans to
persons in need."
For centuries, this service
known as Chevre Gemilut
Chassodim — Society for the
Performance of Deeds of Lov-
ing Kindness — had been pro-
vided by the synagogue.
Around the turn of the cen-
tury in America, these
synagogue "societies" evolv-
ed into community-wide
agencies.
Locally, rabbis have been
asked to include a message in
their Shabbat sermons about
the Hebrew Free Loan
Association. At the Livonia
Jewish Congregation, Henry
Auslander, past president of

the local organization, will
discuss the function and
history of the association.
Board member Herb Gold-
stein will speak at Beth
Achim.
Detroiter Henry Leopold,
past president of the local
Hebrew Free Loan Associa-
tion, is co-president of the na-
tional body.

Tots, Marriage
Programs Due

Another session of the new
"Minyan for Tots" program,
inaugurated by Rabbi Allan
and Mrs. Robin Meyerowitz,
will be held for toddlers and
their parents on Tuesday at
10 a.m. at Cong. B'nai Moshe.
The toddler-parent program
features Hebrew songs,
games, refreshments and
crafts. It is divided into two
sessions: one from six months
to walkers at 10 a.m.; the
other for pre-schoolers up to
three years old at 11 a.m.
There is a charge, and reser-
vations must be made by call-
ing the synagogue office,
548-9000. Both parents and
grandparents are welcome.
The monthly series entitl-
ed, "The Challenge and
Fulfillment of a Loving Mar-
riage," for couples in love and
wanting to stay that way, will
be held on Wednesday at 7:30
p.m. in the synagogue board
room. Led by Rabbi and Mrs.
Meyerowitz, the program
features an open, frank
discussion about modern
marriage. There is a charge,
and some openings are still
available. For reservations,
call the synagogue, 548-9000.

Rome Jews Concerned
Over Melee In Ghetto

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1988

Rome — Roman Jewish
leaders have requested a
meeting with Interior
Minister Amintore Fanfani
following fist fights between
young Jews and pro-Palestin-
ian leftists outside the main
synagogue in the historic
ghetto here.
The Jewish community
charged that the leftists
deliberately entered the ghet-
to after a march and mass ral-
ly for the Palestinian cause in
downtown Rome last week.
The rally, sponsored by the
ultra-left Proletarian Democ-
racy Party, drew more than

8,000 people from all over
Italy. The party secretary,
Giovanni Russo Spena, said
his people entered the ghetto
by mistake on their way to
their buses and were set upon
by Jewish youths.
However, according to the
Jewish community, about 30
leftist demonstrators
gathered at the main syna-
gogue. Some wore kaffiyehs,
the traditional Arab head-
dress, and carried Palestinian
flags. They shouted pro-Pales-
tinian and anti-Semitic slo-
gans. Six people were injured
in the melee that followed.
