Hungary's Jews
Played Key Role

Jerusalem — Hungarian
Jewry played a key role for
many years in the Hungarian
economy in sectors ranging
from small trade to the
highest levels of industry.
Participants were told at a re-
cent conference on
Hungarian Jewry at the
Hebrew University of
Jerusalem.
Hungarian Jewry on the
eve of World War I was the
third largest Jewish com-
munity in Europe, numbering
some one million persons, and
it played an indispensible role
in the Hungarian economy at
all levels of business enter-
prise, in the professions, and
even — unlike most of Europe
— in agriculture, said Dr.
Michael Silber of Hebrew
University.
Even in the years following
World War II, the Jews oc-
cupied a significant role in
the economic, political and
cultural life of the country,
said Silber.
There are some 70,000 to
100,000 Jews still living in
Hungary today, he said.
