OH SWEETHEART

-Smirnoff has no desire to
return to his homeland. He
describesglasnost, the
Soviets' new openness policy
as "bull . " "I think things
there will never change."
But what he hopes will
never change for him in
America is the acceptance he
has received from U.S. au-
diences. He fondly recalls his
two-year stint at the Golden
Nugget club in Las Vegas
that resulted in standing ova-
tions every night. "That's
really special for me. I hope it
will stay that way."
His number one place to
perform is the Comedy Store
in Los Angeles. "It's like my
second home."
Smirnoff writes most of his
material and collaborates
with writer Brian Scully. His
material depends, he says, on
what stage of life he's in. He
used to get material from his
"misunderstandings" of
American life. Today, the dai-
ly news is his pool for inspira-
tion, particularly the
Presidential candidates. Does
he have an example?
"Jesse Jackson said it takes
$30,000 to put a man in
prison for a year. It only takes
$5,000 to put the same person
through college. Jackson's go-
ing to start a campaign. 'Use
a gun, go to Yale!' "
With a book, America on
Six Rubles a Day, countless
club and TV appearances,
movie roles and the freedom
to pursue opportunities that
come his way, comedian
Yakov Smirnoff realizes that
life in America is no joking
matter.

Who wants

A Japanese
Jewish Center?

Washington — Rabbi
Michael Schudrick, Japan's
sole rabbi, said U.S. Jews
should construct a Jewish
cultural center in Tokyo to
disseminate information that
would counter negative Japa-
nese perceptions of Jews.
Schudrick, spiritual leader
of the Jewish Community
Center in Tokyo, made his
comments last week following
an American Jewish
Committee-sponsored con-
ference on the recent spate of
anti-Semitic literature in
Japan.
Approximately 170 Jewish
families live in Tokyo and no
more than 1,000 Jews are in
Japan at any given time, the
rabbi estimated. The Japa-
nese government and people
are not anti- Semitic, he said,
and "no significant acts" of
anti-Semitism have taken
place in Japan in recent
years.
