Charles Driker Among Jewish Council Founders When the Jewish Com- munity Council celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding two months ago, Charles Driker was honored as one of three surviving organizers of the movement. At his death Feb. 8 at age 87, numerous other com- munity causes and cultural movements memorialized him as a creative factor in their founding. He was a dedicated leader in several movements he helped to inspire here. The Sholem Aleichem and Jewish Community Council reading and discussion groups were among the many to which he gave organizational leadership. Born in Zhitomir, Russia, Mr. Driker came to the U.S. in 1922. After attending high school at night, he pursued an education on his own, becom- ing proficient in four languages: Russian, English, Yiddish and Hebrew. An ad- vocate of Yiddish language and culture, he was one of the "Committee of 21" that spearheaded the formation of Metropolitan Detroit's Jewish Community Council. Mr. Driker represented the views of the landsmanshaften. He also was an honorary member of the council's 50th anniver- sary planning committee. Mr. Driker was a founder and president of the Odessa Progressive Aid Society, the Sholem Aleichem Institute and president of the Culture Club of the Jewish Communi- ty Center for 15 years. He was an active participant in the senior adult group at the Jewish Center and became active in political causes on behalf of the senior citizens. Alan Adelson Alan Sander Adelson, an at- torney and past worshipful master of Mosaic Lodge of the Masons, died Feb. 3 at age 54. Born in Detroit, Mr. Adelson attended the Univer- sity of Michigan and was graduated from the Wayne State Unviersity Law School. He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He had been on the defense team at the trial of Jack Ruby. He leaves his wife, Charlene; a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Beth Ann) Mercury of Maui, Hawaii; a son, An- thony; his mother, Mrs. Mur- ray J.
