Dr. Yosef Olmert, Israeli
Middle Eastern studies ex-
pert, on Monday will begin
two weeks as the Detroit
Zionist Federation's 1988
scholar-in-residence.
Dr. Olmert is a lecturer in
the Middle Eastern and
African Studies Department
at Tel Aviv University, where
he is also head of the Syria
and Lebanon desk at the
Shiloah Institute/Dayan
Center for Middle Eastern
and African Studies. He also
lectures at TAU's Overseas
School.
Topics to be covered by Dr.
Olmert during his visit in-
clude the prospects for peace
in the Middle East; the
Palestinian question: past,
present and future; terrorism
in the Middle East and how to
combat it; the Super Powers
and the Middle East;
minorities in the Middle
East; Israel and the Diaspora;
the Jews of the Soviet Union
and Arab lands; Israeli
politics in a time of transi-
tion; religion and state in
Israel, and Israel's relation-
ship with the United States.
Dr. Olmert begins his visit
with a reception 8 p.m. Mon-
day at the home of Karen and
Larry Katz.

The Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion and its Agencies Educa-
tion Committee continue
their education series for
JWF and agency board
members Feb. 21 at the
Maple/Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center.
The day will begin with a
continental breakfast at 9:30
a.m. in the Center's Shiffman
Hall.
With the over-all series
theme "Community Connec-
tions," the meeting will focus
on Federation's allocation pro-
cess. Ibpics for discussion will
include "Understanding
Sources of Funding" and
"Matching Dollars to Needs."
Agency board members will
participate in workshops
where they will discuss
decision-making and needs
evaluation.
A special update on the
Gaza/West Bank unrest will
also be presented.
The meeting is designed to
assist board members in their
development as effective corn-
munity leaders.
