Wallenberg Reported
Alive And In Prison

Montreal — Soviet author-
ities claim he died 40 years
ago, but Raoul Wallenberg is
alive and still in prison, Irwin
Cotler, a McGill University
law professor told a news con-
ference last week before his
departure for Moscow to raise
the issue of Wallenberg with
Kremlin leaders.
Cotler said that he has con-
fidential information from a
"highly placed Swedish diplo-
mat" that as recently as Oc-
tober 1987, Wallenberg was
"alive and incarcerated in a
prison not far from Moscow."
If alive, he would be 76. The
Soviets insist he died of a
heart attack in 1947.
Wallenberg, a young Swed-
ish diplomat posted to Buda-
pest during the final year of
World War II, is credited with
saving at least 100,000 Jews
from deportation to Nazi
death camps by giving them
haven at the Swedish mission
and providing them with

documents. He has not been
heard from since he was ar-
rested by the Red Army when
it occupied Budapest in 1945,
though reports have surfaced
over the years that he was
seen alive in one or another
Soviet prison.
Cotler was invited to Mos-
cow as part of an interna-
tional delegation of jurists
and legislators that has been
monitoring the Helsinki
human rights accords.
