Plenty of Choices T he Mystery Muncher writes . . . about munching around town. "If you're an aficianado of Oriental food, take a ride to Orchard Lake Road south of Maple to Mandarin House. The restaurant is small and unpretentious, but the food is delicately prepared and the service very courteous. For an authentic treat, try the moo shu shrimp with crepes, a dish our waiter proudly told us is served to royalty in the Far East. "If you've never ordered the Hong Kong chicken at Hoa Kow Inn on Nine Mile and Coolidge in Oak Park, you're missing an experience in delicious dining. The chicken comes sizzling on a platter and looks as succulent as it tastes. It's made with subtle spices and is done to perfec- tion. The long-popular Hoa Kow keeps packing them in and it's no wonder. "You don't have to be a meat eater to enjoy Chuck Joseph's Place For Steak on 12 Mile and Coolidge in Berkley. Our favorite is the tiny, tender frog legs in this attractive dining spot. Din- ners come with such starters as meatballs, cottage cheese and chick peas to take the edge off your appetite. "The chic but casual at- mosphere of Appeteaser's on Ring Road and Woodward is charming with its soft, muted lights and peach and mauve decor. The bloody marys are a mini-appetizer in themselves, served with salami, cheese, olive, mushroom, tomato and cucumber on a skewer. The bread tray offers a variety of goodies from matzah to sweet buns. We had chicken salad for lunch and it was delicious. Dinner includes everything from French dip to full-course meals such as creative pastas, seafood and rack of lamb. The service is top notch. "We ordered scallops Primarvera twice in a week, once at Southfield Charley's on 12 Mile and Evergreen and again at Northfield Charley's in the Northfield Hilton in Troy. The prices vary from the more casual Southfield restaurant to the elegant dining spot in Troy where the lively piano music sometimes jars, especially if you're trying to converse. "If you're hungry and in a laid-back frame of mind, Southfield Charley's may be a better bet. If you're not star- ving and patience is one of your virtues, Northfield Charley's continental type dining may be for you. The food in these totally-different atmospheres is seldom disappointing. "Dinner at the Machus Red Fox on Telegraph south of Maple is another leisurely ex- perience. You can feast your eyes on the beautiful wood- dominated rooms with elegant appointments. The famous Machus salad is a must. You may not have an appetite for much else, but the priced entrees are palate-pleasers. "Out Rochester way is the cozy Cooper's Arms which specializes in prime rib. For the health and diet conscious, the broiled whitefish is recommended. Seafood lovers will find plenty of variety on the menu. "The nautical atmosphere at Scallops, also in Rochester, is carried out from the rough barn woods and lead glass featuring nautical scenes to the seashell pattern on the dinnerware. Living up to its name, scallops prepared in a variety of ways are tasty as are the shrimp, lobster and crab dishes. "You may not think of ordering frog legs in a Lebanese restaurant like Phoenicia on Woodward in Birmingham. But they're tiny, tender, crispy without frying, and as tasty as we've had anywhere. The hummus clipped in the wonderful bread is a great starter and the rice pudding is a satisfying and delicious finale to your meal. The lamb dishes, of course, are house specialties. "Not being a lover of Mex- ican food, I can't rate Casa Lupita on Big Beaver in Troy. The rambling restaurant is always packed and the make- it-yourself Mexican dishes seem to be popular. Of course, after a couple of margaritas and a platter of nachos with guacamole dip, who cares about the rest? You may call the place unique or ersatz Mexican. But lots of folks seem to enjoy Case Lupita. "Dennison's on Orchard Lake near 12 Mile is a mecca for seafood buffs. Whether your choice is lobster, mussels, frog legs, scallops or tidbits from the raw bar, you'll be glad you tried this comfortable, pleasant dining spot. Your best bet is to fre- quent this restaurant on Sun-
