of basketball and let them
play and learn about basket-
ball in America. And most
certainly, one of the aims of
the Federation is to mix with
Jewish youth in other coun-
tries, learn about Judaism, to
mix with Jews. It's an anti-
assimilation movement in
that sense. And they're doing
all of those things and they're
making a lot of friends in
America and they're learning
a lot about Americans."
On the court, the
Australians played two games
against Detroit JCC squads
Jan. 25 at the Maple/Drake
Center. The Australian's
senior team built a 20-point
lead in the opener, but Detroit
rebounded for a 71-69 win.
The Aussies, coached by
Charlie Rotstayn, then bounc-
ed back and won the 13-16-
year-old game, 54-42. The
younger Aussies won the final
encounter, 57-53 on Jan. 27.
Silver says Australia will
probably not compete in the
North American Maccabi
Games in Chicago this year,
preferring to concentrate
their resources on the 1989
World Maccabiah Games in
Israel.
One of the players hoping to
represent Australia on next
year's Maccabiah basketball
team is 26-year-old Richard
Smart, from Melbourne. "I
went to the last one," he said.
"That was great. It was the
best basketball standard I've
ever played at. As far as the
tournament went it was all

professional." Australia,
under coach Rotstayn, was
fifth in 1985, their best Mac-
cabiah basketball result to
date.
Smart was on Australia's
previous U.S. tour. He says
Americans know "a bit" more
about Australia now "thanks
to Paul Hogan and Crocodile
Dundee. A lot of people are
more aware of Australia
because of that (movie) and a
few other things."
He described Americans as
"very hospitable people, love-
ly people to stay with."
Smart enjoyed his stay in
Detroit, which was not on the
earlier tour. "It's very cold,"
he said with a laugh —
remember, it's now summer
in Australia. He added, "It's
very segregated as far as the
blacks and the whites go.
More so than a lot of other
places I've been to. But it's
not a bad little city."
Wrublewski also noticed the
urban-suburban division. "In
Sydney a lot of people live in
the city, in the city area. In
Detroit, it seems as though
the people live on the out-
skirts of the city and then on-
ly go into the city on certain
days to work."
Will the Australians keep
in touch with their American
hosts? Smart has some con-
tact with people he met dur-
ing his first tour. "I write the
odd letter, but it was eight
years ago. For the first couple
years I would write quite a
bit. No of them have come
down to Australia. But a few
