Silberberg Volume
Analyzes Jewish Law
Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg
of Bais Chabad Torah Center
of West Bloomfield has
published Zichron Yaakov
Kopel. It is a 187-page com-
parative study in talmudic
Hebrew of several areas of
Halachah found in the
Shulchan Aruch HaRav and
their counterparts which are
located in the works of some
of the great poskim, the Vilna
Goan, Rav Akiv Eiger, Aruch
HaShulchan, and Mishnah
Berurah.
The work is published by
Empire Press, Brooklyn, N.Y.
on the 500th anniversary of
the birth of Rav Yosef Caro,
the co-author of the Shulchan
Aruch.
Rabbi Caro, forced out of
Spain during the time of the
Inquisition, settled in Safad
where he authored the most
definitive Halachic work ever
to be published.
Rabbi Silberberg's book
focuses on 64 areas of con-
troversy in the section of
Aruch Chaim, everyday laws
of prayer, Sabbath and
holidays. Topics include the
permissibility of gentiles
manufacturing taleism,
medicine on Shabbat, con-
struction of an eruv, taking a
bath on the holidays, and
washing hands ritually when
Rabbi Silberberg
one's nails are covered with
polish. The work presents dif-
fering opinions while explain-
ing the approach of the first
Rebbe of Chabad.
The book was written in
memory of Rabbi Silberberg's
father-in-law, the late Rabbi
Yaakov Kopel Shulkind of
Boro Park. His close friend,
Rabbi Haskel Grubner of the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis of
Greater Detroit, wrote the
prologue to the volume. Addi-
tional comments are written
by Rabbis Leizer Levin, Leib
Bakst and others.
Zichron Yaakov Kopel is
available in local Hebrew
bookstores.
