1 1 _ A BERG AND URBACH DETROIT MONUMENT WORKS FINE MONUMENTS SINCE 1910 Rothschild Heir de Baron Phillippe Rothschild, who died Jan. 20 at age 85, was among the most distinguished of the famous family. He was among the creators of the wine in- dustry which dominates internationally. Like many in his family, he was a scientist, author, poet and translator. Baron Phillippe was the sponsor of many stage performances and of operas. During world War II, he and his first wife, Lillie, were sent to concentration camps. Their arrest was during the domination of Marshal Pe- tain.. He escaped over the Pyrenees Mountains to Spain. He later went to England where he joined Gen. Charles de Gaulle's anti- Nazi Forces. His wife died in Ravensbruch death camp. Seymour Israel Mr. Israel was on the board of the Jewish Vocational Service and active in the American Jewish Congress and the Jewish Welfare Federation, among others. A tennis and racquetball player, he also served on the Jewish Com- munity Center Health Club board. Since his retirement, Mr. Israel worked with the Ser- vice Corps of Retired Profes- sionals (SCORE), counseling struggling small businesses, and served on the Institute of Retired Professionals (IRP) board. He has traveled widely with the Nomads Club and con- ducted IRP travel seminars. He was active in the Michigan Oriental Society and other cultural groups, was supportive of theater and the arts and was an avid reader. Mr. Israel leaves his wife, Muriel; three sons, Stuart, Howard and Andrew; a brother, Sol; two sisters, Dorothy Salkin of Chicago and Rochelle Woodman of Arizona; and two grandsons. Matthew Leiter Seymour Israel Seymour Israel, a retired certified public accountant, died Jan. 29 at age 69. Born in Chicago, Ill., Mr. Israel was educated at Nor- thwestern and Wayne State Universities. During World War II, Mr. Israel was a master sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving from 1940 to 1945 in Australia and the Philippines. A CPA for 40 years, Mr. Israel was a director of the Michigan Association of CPAs and received its Distinguished Achievement Award. He was a board member and treasurer of the Michigan Accountancy Fund and served on numerous pro- fessional committees. He also was on the Council of the American Institute of CPAs, president of the Accountants Guild and lectured and con- tributed to professional jour- nals. Prior to his retirement in 1985, he was with the firm of Linden, Klain, Israel and Ross. In the Jewish community, Matthew Leiter, a North Farmington High School basketball player, died Jan. 26 at age 17. A former junior varsity basketball player for the school, Leiter died shortly after playing in his first var- sity game. Leiter had a life- long interest in the game and played in middle school prior to joining his high school team. He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel (Daryl) Leiter; two sisters, Michele and Melissa; and his grand- parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry (Doris) Wechsler, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald (Mary) Leiter and Mr. and Mrs. William (Jeanette) Shapiro, all of Florida. Dr. Morton Roth Dr. Morton Roth, an op- tometrist with offices in Livonia, died Jan. 28 at age 65. Born in Detroit, Dr. Roth was graduated from the Nor- thern Illinois College of Op- tometry. He was a member of Temple Israel and its brotherhood, B'nai B'rith and the Optometric Association. He leaves his wife, Marcia; two sons, Richard of New York and Robert; a daughter, Nicki of Ann Arbor; a sister, Frita Drapkin; three brothers, Albert of Florida, Ben of Spain and Leonard of Florida; and three grandchildren. 19800 WOODWARD AVE.
