HOBBIES: Music, singing, reading and a
devout U of M fan.
BACKGROUND: Jerome Horwitz grew up
in Detroit in the Dexter area, first on
Elmhurst then on Lawrence. He had his
bar mitzvah at B'nai Moshe, where he
is still an active member. "I am a long
standing member at B'nai Moshe. I'm a
member of the ritual committee and I
sing in the men's choir. I just love it,"
says Horwitz. As a youngster, music was
an integral part of his life. His father
was an excellent singer. Also, many
family members played instruments
although the family business was
wholesale and poultry eggs. Horwitz
always enjoyed reading science books as
a child. After graduating Central High
School, he attended the University of
Detroit and became inspired by some of
his professors. He then continued to
pursue the field of chemistry, receiving
a doctorate at the University of
Michigan. After postdoctoral fellowships
at the University of Michigan and
Northwestern University, he taught
organic chemistry for five years at the
Illinois Institute of Technology. In 1956,
he came back to Detroit as a research
associate at the Detroit Institute of
Cancer Research, a precursor to the
Michigan Cancer Foundation. Horwitz,
while researching chemotherapeutic
treatments, synthesized the drug
AZT 20 years ago, which is used today
in the treatment of AIDS. Because of
this original scientific finding, Horwitz
has been featured in People magazine
and was "Person of the Week" on ABC
News with Peter Jennings. He is also a
professor at the Wayne State University
School of Medicine. As Chairman of the
Department of Chemistry at Michigan
Cancer Foundation, he continues his
research in improving the therapy of
cancer. Horwitz is committed to cancer
research: "I came to the Michigan
Cancer Foundation hoping that my
work could make a difference, then my
life would be well spent relieving
'suffering." Horwitz spends his free time
with his family, enjoying his
grandchildren and singing at his
synagogue.
