JCCouncil Plan
Heads For Vote
The Jewish Community
Council has moved into the
final stage of preparing a
strategic plan for restructur-
ing the 50-year-old
organization.
Four reports recommending
ways to implement the
strategic plan have been
presented to the Council's ex-
ecutive committee, according
to Council President Leon
Cohan. The executive com-
mittee will vote on the recom-
mendations at its February
meeting.
No details of the plan have
been made public.
Any recommended constitu-
tional changes will be voted
on at the next Council
Delegate Assembly in March,
Cohan said.
Nearly two years ago,
Cohan initiated the examina-
tion of the Council which led
to the strategic plan.
Cohan will complete his
three-year term as Council
president in May. Executive
Director Alvin Kushner is
due to depart the Council in
March. "My successor is go-
ing to have a clean slate to
work with," Cohan
commented.
E. Germany
To Pay Jews
The World Jewish Congress
this week said East Germany
has agreed in principle to pay
reparations to Jewish
Holocaust victims.
This is the first time since
the Luxemberg Agreement in
1952 that the East German
government has considered
paying reparations to victims
of Nazism.
After the agreement was
signed, it was decided that
West Germany would pay
two-thirds and East Germany
the remainder. But the East
German government has
argued it was not responsible
for previous government ac-
tions since it did not come in-
to existence until 1949.
