LYNN TROMPETER

If, however, Morris Abram
did indeed tell Rabin that
American Jewish commun-
ities could no longer defend
Israel (an aide to Rabin con-
firmed that the call took place
but would not discuss the
substance of the conversa-
tion), Wall would regard it as
"a major break i n the ranks
and a major setback."
"Part of the strength of
Israel's support in the United
States has been the unified
approach of American Jewry,"
he says. "If they were to throw
up their hands, it would have
very, very serious conse-
quences for public opinion in
America — and for Israel
itself."
Wall believes that some of
the flak from America stems
from the death of "unhealthy
illusions" about the Jewish
State: "The people who
brought you the Six-Day War
and Entebbe can also bring
you Pollard and a hard line
against Arab extremists," he
says.
"American Jews are facing
an Israel that is in conflict,
divided, capable of errors and
of appearing to be remote
from the realms of Jeffer-
sonion democracy."
He appreciates the pain
American Jews are suffering
in their realization that "not
all Israelis are heroes," but
having spent part of last week
in Gaza with a platoon of
Israeli soldiers, he also has a
sharp perspective on Israel's
dilemma.
"There was tremendous
tension," he says. "We waited
for 900 people to leave a mos-
que after the Friday prayer
services, knowing that the
slightest thing — the pres-
ence of a television camera,
for example — might trigger
a violent demonstration.
"This is not a campus re-
bellion. Gaza is not Berkeley.
This is a tough neighborhood
and Israel can't allow itself
the luxury of playing by the
Marquis of Queensbury rules.
But that does not mean Israel
is playing by the rules of
the Syrians either — or by
the rules of the Jordanians
and the Egyptians, for that
matter."
Howard Weisband, director-
general of the Jewish Agency
and another American-
Israeli, understands the
"tremendous discomfort" be-
ing felt by American Jews,
while at the same time per-
ceiving events as an Israeli.
"What do they want Israel
to do?" he asks. "I just don't
know what their expectations
are. No one likes the idea of
beating up Palestinians, but
using lethal weapons seems
to me to be far worse."
