During the Detroit Jewish
community's single largest
fund-raising appeal of the
year — Super Sunday Jan. 24
— 7,388 Detroiters con-
tributed $963,886 to the
Allied Jewish Campaign of
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion. Two followup telethons
this week were expected to
raise the total above $1
million.
Last year, Super Sunday
brought in $885,423.
Four hundred Super Sun-
day volunteers included nine-
month-old Carly Schiff and
Super Sunday regular Ronit
Feldman, 6, who doubled her
$1 pledge of last year. Once
again, Yossi Ziffer brought his
friends from Akiva Hebrew
Day School to serve as pledge
card "runners", enabling the
clerical volunteers to process
cards quickly.
Proving that youthful en-
thusiasm has nothing to do
with the calendar were
Hortense Falk, 78, and Sam
Dashow, 76.
Said Falk: "I ask my pro-
spects if they know the
average age of an Ethiopian
immigrant to Israel. Do you
know that it's 14, and that
two-thirds of them are or-
phaned? Can you imagine
14-year-olds crossing the
desert to get to Israel?"

$1 Million In Pledges

paign gift. When his prospect
responded that she never
varies her annual gift of $365
— a dollar a day — Labes
pointed out that this is Leap
Year. She pledged $366.
A determined Stuart Sherr
reached a prospect in the
shower. "He was very nice
about it;' said Sherr. "He
raised his gift."

Meetings Set
For Campaign

Allied Jewish Campaign
volunteers will gather on
Thursday for a briefing by
Yael Dayan and a report of
Campaign progress.
Set for 6:15 p.m. in the
LaMed Auditorium of the
United Hebrew Schools'
Adolph Deutsch Ad-
ministrative Building, the
meeting will launch an inten-
sive period of campaigning
before the Campaign closing
in April.
A March 10 meeting of the
Attorneys Section of the Pro-
fessional Service Division
will hear Judge Avern Cohn
at the home of Campaign
Chairman David Hermelin.
On March 23, Israel Likud
Party member Sara Doron
will address the Professional
Health Division.

700 Christian Clergy
Expected At Beth El

More than 700 Catholic,
Protestant and Eastern Or-
thodox clergy from the
Detroit metropolitan area
will gather at Temple Beth El
Feb. 5 for the 46th annual
Rabbi B. Benedict Glazer In-
stitute on Judaism, sponsored
by the temple.
Rabbi
Herman
E.
Schaalman, a past president
of the Central Conference of
American Rabbis, will be a
featured speaker along with
Dr. Jonathan D. Sarna, a
leading student of American
Jewish history.
Rabbi Schaalman will
speak on "The God of Sinai,
Auschwitz and Jerusalem."
Dr. Sarna will speak on "The
Constitution, Jewish-
Christian Relations and the
Promise of American Life —
A Bicentennial Reflection."
Other program participants
will be Reverend Edward B.
Willingham, executive direc-
tor, the Christian Communi-

cation Council of Metro-
politan Detroit Churches;
Reverend Alex Brunett, direc-
tor of Ecumenical and Inter-
Religious Affairs, Archdiocese

Rabbi Marc S. Blumenthal,
assistant rabbi, Temple Beth

Glazer, son of the late Rabbi
Glazer who founded the in-
stitute before World War II.
