Sigmond Lax

Sigmond Lax, who with his
brother Kalman formerly
operated the only kosher
delicatessen and butcher shop
in the downriver area, died
Jan. 14 at age 96.
Born in Hungary, Mr. Lax
came to the Delray section of
Detroit in 1923. He was a
partner in the Golden
Cracknel Biscuit Co. and also
worked for Ida Products, a
family business.
He established the Lax
Family Club in the 1940s,
and was active in it for more
than 30 years. He was a sup-
porter of Mo'os Chitim and
was among the early
members of the First Hebrew
Congregation of Delray, Cong.
B'nai Moshe and Cong. Beth
Tefilo Emanuel Tikvah.
In 1970, Mr. Lax and his
wife, Fanny, realized a life-
long dream and moved to
Israel.
Besides his wife, Mr. Lax is
survived by a daughter, Mrs.
David (Sarah) Cern of
Raanana, Israel; two sons,
Fred of Bloomfield Hills and
Harold (Yisrael) of Kfar
Adumim, Israel; 12 grand-
children and 25
great-grandchildren.

Stella Canner

Stella Canner, charter
member of the Friendship
Club, died Jan. 22 at age 81.
Born in London, England,
Mrs. Canner was a member of
Temple Israel, Southfield
Senior Citizens, Service With
Love. She also was a
volunteer at Sinai Hospital.
She leaves a son, Milton; a
daughter, Mrs. Robert A.
(Beverly) Krause of
Townsville, N.C.; two sisters,
Mrs. Gerald (Dora) Sparr and
Mrs. Louis (Ceil) Glick of
Hollywood, Fla.; eight grand-
children an seven
great-grandchildren.

Diana Levine

Diana Arlin Levine, a two-
term president and executive
board member of the Jewish
National Fund Council of
Detroit, died Jan. 21 at age
73.
A former Detroiter, Mrs.
Levine resided in Miami
Beach, Fla., at the time of her
death. She was a member of
the Women of Jewish Na-
tional Fund, past president of

B'nai B'rith Women and the
Women's Auxiliary of the
United Hebrew Schools.
She was a life member of
American Mizrachi Women
and was honored by the Fan-
nie Gluck Chapter in 1976 as
its woman of the year. Mrs.
Levine was active in Israel
Bonds and was a life member
of Hadassah in Detroit and
Florida. In the 1970s, she pro-
vided a community calendar
on the Jewish Hour radio
broadcast on WIID-AM.
During Israel's Six-Day
War, Mrs. Levine helped raise
money through Magen David
Adom, Israel's emergency
medical service, for am-
bulances. She was a member
of the Pinsker Progressive
Aid Society, Farband and
Cong. Beth Torah in Miami
Beach. In her spare time, Mrs.
Levine wrote poetry.
She leaves two daughters,
Marilyn Joy Arlin of North
Miami Beach, Fla., and
Beverly Doris Taylor of
Honolulu, Hawaii; a brother,
Saul Cooper of West Bloom-
field; six grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren. In-
terment Detroit.

Eli Castleman

Eli B. Castleman, a self-
employed real estate investor,
died Jan 20 at age 77.
Born in Boston, Mass., Mr.
Castleman was the owner of
the Wolverine Textile Co.
from 1935 to 1962. He was
graduated from the Boston
Latin School and Harvard
University, where he earned
a B.A. degree in 1931. he was
on the board of directors of
the Harvard Club, Detroit
Chapter, and B'nai B'rith.
He leaves his wife, Emily;
two daughters, Mrs. Richard
(Susan) Levin of Tenafly, N.J.,
and Carol Falk; a son, Lee C.
Light; a step-son, Gregory A.
Brehm; a brother, Frank; and
five grandchildren.

F. Marshall
Active In JWV

Florence Marshall, past
president of the Eli Levin
Auxiliary of the Jewish War
Veterans, died Jan. 26 at age
58.
Born in Detroit, Mrs. Mar-
shall was a board member of
Bloch-Israel Benevolent
Association, a member of
Bloch-Israel Chapter of B'nai
B'rith Women and Lt. Roy
Green Auxiliary, Jewish War
Veterans.
She leaves her husband, Ir-
ving; a daughter, Nadine; a
brother, Sidney Blumenthal;
and two granddaughters.
