The numbered videos and alphabetized binders of writ- ten materials were stored, as of December, on rented book- shelves in a large room in the middle of the Southfield of- fice. Members enter through a private door, walk past the photo and video studios, into the library room. Members scan the binders — grey for men, pink for women. If they wish to view a corresponding video, they take it off of the shelves and into a connecting screening room. The room has several individual cubicles, each with a Beta tape player and headphones for privacy. The GE staffers advise their members on how to best use the service, every step of the way. "We are here to make them successful,' says Woods, "as successful as they possibly can be. If we can make recom- mendations so they come across better or their photo- graphs or their written ma- terials are better than average, then we will make whatever suggestions that are necessary .. . "For example, a gentleman says, maybe he feels that in his previous relationship, that the woman that he dated was interested in only going out to dinner and spending his money and he may say in his video, 'and don't expect me to take you to dinner,' because of past experience. Well, I'm sure he doesn't mean that, really, so we may try to veer him back to what he really needs, and that is, let's think of different things to do." GE member Ruth Sloan, 37, confirms the GE staff's helpfulness. "The people there are real, real nice. They're very willing to help you and they're real in- terested in how you're pro- gressing." A co-worker gave Sloan a flyer sent by GE late last summer, and Sloan filled out the enclosed survey and mail- ed it to GE. "They called me," she explains, "and I went over, sort of on a lark, just to see what it was all about. And — hook, line and sinker — I became a member. "It's been lots of fun. I've gotten six responses. Four of the six would be people that I would be interested in. Two I decided against. That was hard, I had to sort of write a nice little note saying, 'thank you but no thank you, it's just not a match.' " She currently sees one of the four members she was interested in. She had just received a postcard from GE saying another member had selected her, but she had not yet viewed his materials. Woods calls the videotaping a "conversation. We don't like to call it an interview, because it's not. We discuss for a good 15 minutes prior to the videotaping what sort of things they want to discuss and we also have them write down a lot of information so that each videotape is unique, because each person is uni- que. So we like to bring out that uniqueness in those tapes." Are people generally ner- vous when the camera rolls? "They are," says Sarver, "but our (video)taper is real good at making somebody comfort- able, that's their job." "Additionally," says Woods, "we do it as many times as (the clients) need to, until they're comfortable with their materials. Like I said, it's a conversation, and a lot of times, the camera — they're so busy talking to the video- taper that they don't even realize it's on." Sloan enjoyed the taping, despite a small misunder- standing. "I had a blast. I'm in a sales position so it was real good for me to see how I am perceived by my clients. I really enjoyed it."
