I NEWS I Israeli Embassy Marks Dr. King's Birthday Washington (JTA) — The Is- rael Embassy's fourth annual commemoration of the birth- day of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was the setting for 300 people — blacks and Jews — to pay their respects to King and to reminisce about the civil rights movement. At the tribute to King, who would have been 59 last week, Arnold Aaronson, who was a close associate of King's and the first executive director of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, an umbrella organization of groups sup- porting civil rights, stressed that the historic 1963 March on Washington, which he helped organize, included not only all of the black organiza- tions but "a cross section of the best in America." Aaronson and his two suc- cessors as executive director of the Leadership Conference, Marvin Caplan, a labor leader, and Ralph Neas, the current director, were honored with trees in their names planted in the Martin Luther King Jr. Forest in the Galilee. The Jewish National Fund is co-host with the em- bassy for the annual event. But a quiet controversy sim- mered in the background of the event. While there were many blacks in the audience, some blacks who had been in- vited did not attend in protest over Israel's handling of the unrest on the West Bank and Gaza Strip. An Israeli Embassy spokes- man said that some 1600 per- sons had been invited and none of those who had ac- cepted the invitation later cancelled. But James Zogby, executive director of the Arab American Institute, had urg- ed blacks not to attend, and he and three others were ar- rested outside the embassy during the ceremony. Coretta Scott King, the slain civil rights leader's widow, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in response to Zogby that the commemoration for King "should be a day of unity. We call for people in conflict with each other, even at war, to lay down their weapons and set aside their differences for one day and come together in the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr." 1DF Adapted To Violence Tel Aviv (JTA) — Although the Israel Defense Force was neither trained nor equipped for riot control, it adapted well when faced with recent violence in the administered territories, according to Maj. Gen. Shlomo Errell, retired comptroller of the defense establishment. Errell, a reservist and former navy commander, told a news conference in Haifa last week that "the army never thought it would be called on to deal with the maintenance of order, to stand against events on the scale as we have experienced in the territories in recent weeks."
