Fine Dining At Home
At The Embassy Suites
DANNY RASKIN
Local Columnist
any people have al-
ready heard about
the Embassy Suites
Hotel on Franklin Road off
Northwestern Highway, with
its slogan of "The Suite Life,"
but if you asked about Well-
ington's, they're most apt to
ask, "Where's that?"
Wellington's within Em-
bassy Suites is an uninten-
tionally "guarded secret"
fine-dining restaurant that
seats 160 persons in an open-
air style, atrium atmosphere
that holds a delightful charm.
Two glass elevators with
lights atop and below ride up
and down nine floors of
balconies with green hanging
leaves for a most imposing
surrounding.
This gracious restaurant in
Embassy Suites is broken in-
to two areas without taking
away its ambience . . . The
center portion of complete
open dining is at tables sur-
rounded by live ficus trees
with intertwined little white
lights . . . Red padded chairs
with arms are at tables of
pink tablecloths and napkins.
Another area in back for
more secluded dining, but
still having the open air look,
is at tables with gray
tablecloths and napkins .. .
surrounded by gray
wallpapered walls with large
floral design and a few
tastefully-arranged mirrors
. . . The excellent lighting, ac-
coustics and hanging
chandeliers are plus factors of
decor.
Frosted etched glass is all
around . . . as are live plants,
dark mahogany and brass .. .
The rooms are separated
only by a mahogany rack
along the sides for storage of
Wellington's red wines . . .
Chairs in the subtle back
area are a blue-gray print .. .
and the unusual fixtures have
a lovely imported look.
Our waitress in a red tie,
Barbara Green, usually
works banquets for Mark For-
man, director of catering at
Embassy Suites, but is at
Wellington's on Wednesday
evenings . . . She's very good
. . . extremely personable,
very efficient and highly
attentive.
Barbara brought me a
delicious, full-bodied cup of
seafood gumbo that is on the
menu at all times plus gaz-
pacho and a soup of the day
. . . The seasoning was superb
. . . Also a very tender and
tasty piece of pickerel . . .
George Dolph, executive chef
graduate of Culinary In-
stitute at Hyde Park, N.Y.,
was not working this evening
which could account for the
pickerel not being complete-
ly deboned or having difficult-
to-remove skin on the bottom.
At a table next to ours, a
person had a huge seafood
salad with shrimps, scallops,
etc. and asked her waitperson
if it was for two.
Wellington's, open for both
lunch and dinner, is noted for
being the area's only
restaurant that features 100
percent Angus beef (natural-
ly beef Wellington is the
house speciality) . . . Angus
beef is noted for its flavor,
tenderness and juiciness .. .
with no additives, artificial
coloring or preservatives
used in processing.
John Lesinski, evening
manager at Wellington's, is a
great nephew of Rep. John
Lesinski and second cousin to
T. John Lesinski, former
Michigan lieutenant gover-
nor . . . Tracey Martiss is
daytime manager.
Ernest Arcos, Embassy
Suite general manager, has
done the proper thing in sur-
rounding himself with "key"
personnel in management .. .
like Joel Yoder, assistant
manager; Dave Johnson,
director of food and beverage;
and Mark Forman, director of
catering.
One of Mark's rooms, the
Woodward Ballroom at Em-
bassy Suites, holds up to 270
people without dancing .. .
230 with dance floor . . . Its
Cass Ballroom is 150 without
and 100 with . . . The Hull
Room for rehearsal dinners,
showers and brunches; holds
up to 60.
Embassy Suites' LaSalle
Lounge holds 150 with ribp 40
music for much liveliness .. .
and has special evenings
every day . . . For example,
tomorrow evening a "Think
Summer Night" with guys 'n
gals wearing sunglasses for
$1 off on pina coladas, mai
tais and frozen daiquiries .. .
Monday is. Michigan's 151st
birthday and Michigan Trivia
is played by spinning a wheel
for dinner for two at Well-
ington's . . . Thursday is "Of-
ficial Clash Day" with folks
wearing mismatched shoes or
socks for a chance to win din-
ner for two at Wellington's .. .
Friday night is "Amateur
Night" and the audience
selects three best comics.
Fine dining and cocktails at
Wellington's . . . dancing and
