Tel Aviv (JTA) — Twenty-
seven years ago, the name of
Shimon Ben Kosiba — also
known as Bar Kochba — was
found for the first time at an
archaeological dig in Israel.
Two months ago, it was found
again.
Bar Kochba led the Jewish
revolt against the Roman
emperor Hadrian from 132 to
135 C.E. His name is part of
the pantheon of Jewish
heroes, but until 1960, con-
temporary references to it
were never discovered.
The first reference was on a
papyrus document unearthed
in the Nahal Hever region.
The second was found deep in
a cave in the Lachish region,
just north of the Negev, which
apparently served as a
hideout for Jews fighting the
Romans.
A team of archaeologists
headed by Dr. Amos Kloner,
chief archaeologist of the
Judaea region, uncovered a
bronze weight bearing the in-
scription: "Shimon Ben
Kosiba, prince and leader of
Israel."

High Court To
Rule On Women

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Mayor
Shlomo Lahat and the Tel
Aviv City Council have been
ordered by Israel's Supreme
Court to show cause why a
woman should not be allowed
to sit on the local committee
that will nominate the city's
next Ashkenazic chief rabbi.

Soviet Envoys'
Visas Extended

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The visas
of the Soviet consular delega-
tion here have been extended
for one month. Moreover, a
further extension might be
given, depending on an ex-
pected favorable response
from Moscow to Israel's re-
quest to send a similar
delegation to the Soviet
Union.
Maariv reported last week
that Israel has been urging
such reciprocity ever since the
Soviet delegation arrived
here last June. The visas for
the Soviet personnel were due
to expire at the end of the
month, but Yossi Beilin,
political director general of
the Foreign Ministry, told the
head of the Soviet delegation,
Georgi Martirosov, that Israel
is prepared to significantly
extend the visas on a
reciprocal basis.
The delegation came here
six months ago to inspect
Soviet property in Israel and
to examine the status of
Soviet nationals living in the
country. It is the first Soviet
diplomatic presence in Israel
in more than 20 years.
Moscow broke relations with
Israel during the 1967 Six-
Day War.

Bar Kochba
Is Found Again

Lahat had originally
favored a woman on the com-
mittee, but reversed himself
under pressure from Likud
party headquarters and Or-
thodox leaders. The high
court issued its injunction at
the request of the Center
Movement, a new moderate
political party that Lahat
founded before rejoining his
original party, Likud.
His vote was crucial in
preventing the election of a
woman to the nominating
committee. The committee
cannot act until there is a
final ruling by the Supreme
Court.
The rabbinical authorities
refuse even to consider a
woman participating in the
election of chief rabbis,
however indirectly, even
though the nominating com-
mittee has no religious or rab-
binical functions. •
Chief Rabbi Lau of
Netanya, who is considered
somewhat liberal, is the
favored candidate for the Tel
Aviv post. He said he would
not accept it if there was a
woman on the committee that
nominated him.

the Arabs kill people, which
they do regularly, nobody
pays attention. But that
doesn't relieve us of our moral
obligation. The fact that the
other guy is worse doesn't

"When you rely more and
more on a military solution,
your democracy and values
are at stake, and you become
more like the other side. I was
active in the Democratic Par-
ty here, and people who know
me know I'm not a left-wing
radical. But I know that there
are threats to democracy, to
the rule of law in Israel, and
I want to work in these
areas!'
