This interest, with the major help from a Young Israel Trust Fund charter of residual assets — remaining from Young Israel of Detroit and Young Israel of Nor- thwest — resulted in the pur- chase of land in that territory for a new branch called Young Israel of Bloomfield. Young Israel of Oak-Woods is not closing its doors. It just invested a capital expen- diture in paving its entire parking lot. It just concluded its most successful annual banquet and journal. It has renovated and painted its en- tire interior .. . Nor is Young Israel of Greenfield with any inten- tions of leaving Oak Park .. . David S. Tanzman, President, Young Israel Council of Metropolitan Detroit Unworthy Journalism The Jan. 8 article "Fisher, Hermelin Back Boesky" covered a newsworthy subject. Messrs. Fisher and Hermelin were correct in writing the judge. I'm sure they understood that their letters would likely become part of the public record of the case. It is important for a judge in the sentencing process to know as much as possible about an offender, including circumstances in mitigation. However, your last paragraph comment about Mr. Hermelin declining com- ment and Mr. Fisher declin- ing to return your call was not newsworthy. The paragraph represents either juvenile journalism or an ef- fort at intimidation, I'm not sure which. It was unworthy of the professionalism The Jewish News usually exhibits in its pages. Avern Cohn U.S. District Judge Detroit NJAgenda Is Pro-Israel Recent letters to The Jewish News and your article and editorial on the Ann Ar- bor protest of Israeli govern- ment policies in the West Bank and Gaza (Jan. 15) necessitate a response. Though the Ann Arbor inci- dent and the statement in the Michigan Daily occurred out- side our community, and thus without the participation of New Jewish Agenda of Detroit, we must emphatical- ly reject your characterization of Agenda as a "pro- Palestinian group." Such labeling, which smacks of McCarthyism, is totally false in the sense in which that term is used in the Jewish community. Only if "pro-Palestinian" is given the precise definition of opposing the denial of human rights to Palestinians (as to other peoples) and supporting the creation of a Palestinian state which explicitly recognizes Israel and would live alongside of it in peace, can such a term be accurate- ly applied to Agenda. Ken Knoppow New Jewish Agenda, Detroit OPINION Dr. King Continued from Page 7 even when it comes to speak- ing out against racism and other issues of mutual con- cern. Of course, when one looks at the attitudes of the speakers that black student groups invite to campus, it is no wonder that their at- titudes are negative. People like Louis Farrakhan, Kwame Toure (formerly Stokely Carmichael) and various representatives of the PLO regularly tour the cam- puses to present anti-Semitic diatribes. What can be done? Well, to borrow Jesse Jackson's favorite buzzword, Jewish students must continue to engage in dialogue with their black classmates. In addition, there must be a conscious ef- fort to educate them about Israel, particularly the positive role Israel has played in the Third World, about which few have any great knowledge. There is also a need to make clear that dif- ferences of opinion on issues like affirmative action do not erase the common goals blacks and Jews otherwise share. Jews must also be visi- ble supporters of those com- mon causes. In recent years there has been a recognition of the pro- blems of anti-Israel propagan- da on campus, but there has been less sensitivity to the antagonism that exists bet- ween Jewish students and minority students. Given the increasing level of political participation by non-whites, it is imperative that a trend of indifference or hostility toward Israel not be allowed to evolve among tomorrow's leaders. Dr. King would not have hesitated to act, neither should we.
