"Just A Bundle of Nerves"

Frequent Patient Complaint

I'm just a bundle of nerves," many patients who have no
other apparent problem complain. "I always fear the worst, even
though it never happens. I can't get to sleep nights for fear that
everything will go wrong the following day. What's wrong with
me?"
Unfortunately, their question is not
always easily answered. Well-meaning
advice to "get a different job" or to create
"a more relaxed lifestyle is more easily
given than followed. And while these steps
may help to alleviate the problem they are
seldom the total answer. Often there is a
very real cause for the nervous individual's
condition, a cause they never suspect.
In a study conducted by the National
Council on Psychotherapy of the National
Chiropractic Association, a number of
Dr. Stanley Levine
patients with nervous or mental disorders were found to be
suffering from dislocations of the spine. Often the patient's
emotional state had been quite normal proceding a fall or other
accident and deteriorated rapidly following the incident of
injury. In case after case, the victim showed improvement
following a Chiropractic treatment for the spinal problem.
To understand how this could be, one must recognize that
the spine is the lifeline of the body. Virtually every bodily
function depends on nerve impulses from the brain. The nerves
that carry these impulses originate in the spinal cord and emerge
between the vertebrae of the spine on their way to the parts
of the body they serve. When the spine is properly aligned, nerve
impulses flow freely and the body functions as it should. But
a dislocated vertebrae pinches the nerves, affecting their ability
to communicate the brain's messages to the body.
The net result is improper body function. This may take
the form of headaches, insomnia, upset stomach or any number
of other ailments . . . including nervous tension.
While it doesn't necessarily follow that a dislocated spine
is the cause of every case of nervous tension or other emotional
disturbances, the possibility that it is a contributing factor should
not be overlooked. In those cases where it is a factor, the
underlying cause of the problem will remain until proper body
function is restored.
