K KOSHER 72 FRIDAY, JANUARY 15, 1988 Green Wins CJF Award Irwin Green has been nam- ed recipient of the Council of Jewish Federations 1987 En- dowment Achievement Award. The honor is bestowed an- nually upon a lay leader whose vision, dedication and leadership have been in- strumental in the Federa- tion's growth of endowment funds. Green played a key role in the creation of the Federated Endowment Fund of the Jewish Welfare Federa- tion/United Jewish Charities and currently heads its Allied Jewish Campaign Permanent Endowment Fund — a major component of the communi- ty's endowment fund program. Begun three years ago, the AJC Permanent Endowment Fund was the first of its type in the country, according to Federated Endowment Fund Chairman George M. Zeltzer. It ensures that the programs and services funded through the Federation's Allied Jewish Campaign will be met now and in the future, par- ticularly in the event of a cash crisis. Green is a former president of the United Jewish Charities, as well as a current board member of UJC, the Jewish Welfare Federation and Sinai Hospital. He has served on Federation's ex- ecutive committee and Irwin Green several budgeting and plann- ing divisions and is a reci- pient of the prestigious Fred M. Butzel Memorial Award. Green has been a leader of the Allied Jewish Campaign, serving as its general chair- man in 1965 and 1966. A former director of the Jewish Community Center, Green played a leadership role in the capital fund drive for its Maple-Drake building. He has been actively involv- ed in the Holocaust Memorial Center, the Detroit Chapter of the American Technion Socie- ty, the Israel American Chamber of Commerce and others, and was instrumental in introducing many Israeli products to the U.S. market. Green was recently named "Man of the Year" by Detroit Men's ORT. "Hand in Hand for Justice," a 19-panel display developed as a tribute by the American-Israel Committee to comemorate Martin Luther King, Jr., is making its Michigan debut now through Jan. 22 in the lobby of United Hebrew Schools. The exhibit was purchased for the Jewish Community Council by Borman's Fund Inc. Panels include photos and quotes from civil rights demonstrations led by Dr. King, as well as depictions of commemorations in Israel and the United States. Invocations by prominent rabbis at many of the gatherings are included. To arrange a showing, call Miriam Schey, 962-1880.
