originally taught by the
parents. Today, parents and
teenagers assist the regular
classroom teachers.
In other ways, too, JPI has
become a bit more conven-
tional over the years. The two-
and-a-quarter-hour-a-week
Sunday school has been sup-
plemented by optional after-
school programs, including
Hebrew language classes and
a b'nai mitzvah program
which involves a
"philosophical" study of
Torah and Talmud in English,
32 hours of community ser-
vice, and the presentation of
a research project at a group
ceremony.
The introduction three
years ago of the b'nai mitzvah
ceremony was motivated by
more than an urge to return
to roots, according to
Hirschhorn. "We were losing
males at bar mitzvah age."
The b'nai mitzvah program
seems to have done the trick.
In the last three years, he
adds, JPI has seen an upsw-
ing in membership. Many
young families are joining.
And the Jewish Center is also
a draw, says Education Direc-
tor Marilyn Wolfe. "We don't
have to make a field trip to
anything that's happening in
the community. We're right
here."
Wolfe explains JPI's ap-
proach to traditional Jewish
sources: "In JPI there isn't a
fear of mentioning God as it
appears. We tell them, 'This
is our Torah. Whether you
personally believe that it was
handed down by God or writ-
ten by man, these are our
stories and that's why we
study them.' We're not so
afraid of individual dif-
ferences and individual
beliefs.
"We take what's there and
use the more ethical issues.
We don't have to throw out
the whole body because it
doesn't suit our secular
philosophy."

"There are some people
who don't want to see God
mentioned," adds Hirschhorn,
a devoted secularist. "They
see God as a crutch, a fantasy
figure."
Hirschhorn's strict secular
position is losing ground in
JPI, Wolfe says. "I found that
[in the past] a lot more
parents were committed
secularists," says Wolfe. "In
the past few years the new
people coming in are not so
committed to secularism. So
I think there are a lot more
people who believe in God."
How much Jewish know-
ledge and identity can JPI
pass on to its children in two
hours on Sunday mornings?
Wolfe is realistic, but not
resigned. "It's a beginn-
