on a beat would complain
of being mugged by a gang.
"Sometimes we find
ourselves under a real
threat and it is not im-
aginary — a real physical
threat," said Lieutenant
Eldad, a 23 year old
member of Col. Yisrael's
unit.
"One day they threw a
stone at us that was this
big," he said, holding his
hands a foot apart. "Each
one of us can show you
wounds from the stones
and garbage they throw at
us. But even then we can-
not act and use our full
means. We are paying for
that. We are paying with
risks and wounds.
"I don't think a com-
mander should be afraid,
but when people start
throwing stones, I'm
scared. But there are rules,
and we must keep them.
We are policemen here, and
we must keep the road
clean."
But then something
always happens to remind
them that they are not just
policemen in the eyes of
the local inhabitants, and
that when it comes to rela-
tions between Israelis and
Palestinians in the oc-
cupied territories, there is
no crime, there is only
politics; there is no death,
only "martyrdom;' there
are no accidents, only acts
of war.
"In Askar refugee camp
we have an observation
post on this old man's
house," Colonel Yisrael
said. "He was about 70.
Last week he came up one
day and told the soldiers to
be careful with some
things he had on the roof.
They told him not to worry.
As he was going down the
stairs he collapsed with a
heart attack. So one of the
soldiers started giving him
mouth-to-mouth and
massaging his heart and
another called for a local
doctor."
"After about 25 minutes
this Palestinan doctor ar-
rived," the colonel, his
voice tight with emotion.
"And he saw our soldier
giving this guy mouth-to-
mouth and the first thing
the doctor said, the first
sentence out of his mouth
is, 'You killed him: Our
soldier was in shock. He
didn't believe that this was
the doctor. Here he was
giving this guy mouth-to-
mouth, and all the doctor
can say is 'You killed
"
After pronouncing the
man dead, the doctor went
