and Gaza, giving them con-
trol over their daily lives, but
not over the land.
In fact, the phenomenon
that has appeared in the West
Bank and Gaza over the past
month may have rendered the
positions of both of Israel's
major political blocs obsolete.
"Every riot, every demon-
stration, every incident in the
territories means a thousand
extra votes for Tehiyah," said
one observer, referring to
Israel's tough ultra-nation-
alist party which was created
to oppose the return of the
Sinai Desert to Egypt in ex-
change for peace.
"A lot of people on street are
expressing their resentment
against the Arabs," he said.
"They are asking why the
Jews — the victors — are
afraid to go into the Arab
towns and villages while the
Arabs have no fear walking
around Jewish areas and
traveling in Jewish buses."
Barring some unpredictable
change in the political equa-
tion of the conflict, Israel may
be about to embark on a
journey into uncharted ter-
ritory, and all the signposts
that can be discerned appear
to be pointing in one
direction.
Israelis, despairing of any
solution to their dilemma, are
likely to be drawn increasing-
ly to the outermost reaches of
the political spectrum —
ultimately, perhaps, to the
side of those who advocate a
wholesale expulsion of the
Arabs.
At the same time, the Pal-
estinians are likely to present
a mirror image, hastening
their journey towards the re-
jectionism of the political and
religious extremists.
Israel's single greatest
achievement — the Six-Day
War, which dropped the West
Bank and Gaza Strip into its
lap may yet prove to be its
single most disastrous
miscalculation.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 15, 1988
United Nations (TEA) —
Lebanon complained to the
United Nations last week
that Israel, in its recent at-
tack on terrorist bases in
Lebanon, "bombed some
blocks of flats near Sidon"
killing at least seven
members of one Palestinian
family.
Lebanon stopped short of
calling for an official meeting
of the Security Council to con-
demn Israel, but said
nonetheless that it reserves
the right to call for such a
meeting.
