Haggerty & Meadowbrook) (313) 474-9175 Shamir and his hard-line Likud Party, which forms half of the Israeli government. That prospect for a political settlement has now all but vanished. Israel has been left holding a bitter, frustrated baby which has suddenly be- come conscious of its disabil- ities and of the collective power it possesses to fight back. Moreover, none of Israel's potential negotiating part- ners — Jordan, Egypt, Syria, the Palestine Liberation Organization — appear anx- ious to relieve it of the burden, except on their own uncompromising, conflicting (and, to most Israelis, unac- ceptable) terms. Thus, the violent unrest which has rocked the West Bank and Gaza for the past month, may mark a funda- mental watershed in the history of the Jewish state. Most significantly, it is like- ly to produce a change in at- titudes — not because Israel's security is being threatened by a mob of stone-throwing youths, but because the 1.3 million Palestinians will not go away and because the con- vulsions will inevitably be repeated — and intensified. In the absence of any move- ment towards a diplomatic solution — and such a pros- pect has actually receded in the past month — the Israeli political center is likely to move to the right and the future will belong to the extremists. Even in the Labor Party, which is committed to ter- ritorial concessions in ex- change for peace, there has been a discernible lurch to the right. Last week, voices were heard calling for the annexa- tion of those areas which are considered vital to Israel's security, while there was unambiguous support for the tough line adopted by Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin. The Likud Party, which is dogmatically opposed to any territorial compromise, in- sists on maintaining ultimate control over all of Greater Israel and has been left un- moved by the recent develop- ments. Asked last week whether he saw any possibility of ter- ritorial concessions, a senior member of the Likud Party, Dr Eliahu Ben-Elissar, replied: "lb be very frank, very candid, very open, very precise — no." The "maximum compro- mises and concessions" his party was prepared to make, he said, was to allow a large measure of autonomy for the Palestinians of the West Bank AT MITSUBISHI CRYSTAL ONE Model #460 ALL '87 FURS MUST BE SOLD.
