Babbitt Wants
Mideast Role

New York (JTA) — Former
Arizona Gov. Bruce Babbitt,
a candidate for the
Democratic presidential
nomination, said last week
that the United States has
"abdicated its leadership role
in the Middle East" and
should increase it.
Babbitt told a meeting of
the Foreign Policy Associa-
tion that "the United States
has more leverage than ever
before" in the region because
of Israel's economic
dependence on the United
States and changes among
Arab states.
Babbitt called the present
unrest in Israel's ad-
ministered territories "stark
reminders that the region
cannot lapse into the status
quo" and said the United
States should help in the
"search for accommodation
that reconciles Palestinian
aspirations for self-
government with Israel's
security needs."
According to his campaign
literature, he has supported
autonomy for Palestinians,
but not an independent
Palestinian state.

Partners To
Produce Vehicle

An Israeli company and a
Troy design and engineering
firm have formed a joint ven-
ture to produce vehicles for
wheelchair-bound drivers.
The Israeli Elkon Group
and the local EnTech com-
pany say they plan to produce
25,000 vehicles at a new
facility to be built in Benton
Harbor.
The partners claim that the
project will employ more than
500 workers, with the
possibility of an additional
100 if a supplier locates near
the facility.
Elkon bought the vehicle's
design from a British com-
pany. The partners plan to re-
engineer the vehicle to U.S.
specifications.
