New Orthodox
Party Forming

Jerusalem (JTA) — Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres is en-
couraging the establishment
of a new, moderate religious
party to enter the 1988
Knesset elections and, if suc-
cessful, join in coalition with
Labor. Two Orthodox Knesset
members of the Labor Party,
Rabbi Menachem HaCohen
and Aharon Nahmias, last
week announced plans to
form such a party.
But Peres hopes to induce
other prominent Orthodox
figures to join them and
possibly lead the new faction,
because HaCohen and Nah-
mias are not considered to
have sufficient influence
alone to woo religious moder-
ates from other parties. So far
the search has not been
successful.
HaCohenis a former mili-
tary chaplain and aide to
former Ashkenazic Chief Rab-
bi Shlomo Goren. He has
served several terms in the
Knesset and is chief rabbi of
the moshav movement. Nah-
mias is a former mayor of
Safed.
Their plans were welcomed
by the ultra-Orthodox politi-
cians of the Shas and Agudat
Yisrael parties in the belief
that the National Religious
Party would be further
weakened. The NRP, which
has veered further toward the
right since the retirement of
its veteran leader, Yosef Burg,
still attracts religious
moderates.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The man-
agement of a major industrial
plant has accused its Arab
employees from the admin-
istered territories of sabotage
and willful absenteeism
resulting in significant
damage and financial losses,
according to news reports last
week.
The complaint was con-
tained in a secret memoran-
dum from Dov Pollak, chair-
man of the Polgat textile
mills in Kiryat Gat, to
Minister of Commerce and In-
dustry Ariel Sharon. The
memorandum was prepared
three months ago, Haaretz
reported, long before the
latest wave of disturbances in
the West Bank and Gaza
Strip.
According to the newspaper,
Polgat officials initially refus-
ed to confirm the memoran-
dum, but Pollak later told the
newspaper that it had been
prepared at his request to be
forwarded to state agencies.
