Israel Gains
From VOA
Transmitter

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel
will eventually own the Voice
of America radio transmitter
the United States is building
in the Arava region of the
Negev. But long before that
happens, Israel will reap
economic benefits from it,
Communications Minister
Gad Yaacobi told the Cabinet
last Sunday.
Under the agreement with
the United States, formally
endorsed by the Cabinet, the
facility will revert to Israeli
ownership 25 years after it
goes into operation, at no cost
to Israel.
The transmitter will be
completed within four to five
years, Yaacobi said. During
this time, the United States
will invest approximately
$300 million in the project.
Under the agreement with
Washington, half that
amount must be spent on
local purchases of equipment
and jobs for Israeli workers.
The VOA transmitter, in-
tended for broadcasts to the
Soviet Union and Eastern
bloc countries, will consist of
16 antenna towers, each over
700 feet high. Its location in
Israel will make the broad-
casts less prone to jamming
than VOA transmissions from
Europe.

ADL Blasts
TASS Report

New York — The Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith has protested a TASS
dispatch headlined "U.S.A.:
Raging Anti-Semitism," as
being "an exercise in
Orwellian 'Newspeak, filled
with tortured logic, disinfor-
mation and distortion."
In a letter to Nikolay D.
Turkatenko, TASS'
Washington, D.C. bureau
chief, Abraham H. Foxman,
ADlis national director said,
"It is ironic that in the sup-
posedly more open-minded
era of 'glasnost,' the official
Soviet government press
agency would engage in such
transparent deception."
The TASS story, written by
Kirill Yuryev, was sent to
American papers with a
Moscow, Dec. 6 dateline. Ac-
cording to Foxman, it
reflected "striking ignorance
about its subject and is fatal-
ly flawed by its inaccuracies."
Foxman said that Yuryev
misused statistics lifted from
Anti-Defamation League an-
nual reports of anti-Semitic
incidents.
