NEWS Israel Fears Syrian Attack London (JTA) — Israeli military planners fear a sur- prise attack by Syria that could dislodge the Israel Defense Force from the Golan Heights, according to a report last week in the Sunday Telegraph. The attack would be fol- lowed by a United Nations cease-fire call 48 hours later, before Israel could mobilize its reserves, thereby freezing the situation, the newspaper's military correspondent wrote. He said that while the IDF does not consider an attack imminent, it admits the Syrians are capable of initial success. Israel's technological edge on the battlefield has been narrowed by Syria's ac- quisition of T-72 tanks equip- ped with secret Soviet armor capable of surviving direct hits, the correspondent wrote. The so-called reactive ar- mor acts as an outer skin that explodes when struck by a shell, leaving the main body of the tank intact. Its in- troduction on the Soviet T-64 battle tanks in Eastern Europe a year ago caused con- siderable concern among NATO commanders. Extradition Is Planned Bonn (JTA) — Suspected Nazi war criminal Josef Schwammberger will be ex- tradited to West Germany shortly to stand trial, Argen- tine officials promised the prosecutor's office in Stut- tgart last week. They said their country gave high priority to West Germany's extradition re- quest and that legal means appear to have been found to deprive Schwammberger of the Argentine citizenship he acquired nearly 40 years ago. Schwammberger, 75, is believed to have been direct- ly involved in the killings of at least 1,000 Jews in Nazi- occupied Poland in 1942 and 1943. Documentary evidence was brought to Argentina by a representative of the federal prosecutor's office last November.
