Hebrew (16 in the Diaspora
and 3 in Jerusalem), 15 in
English, 14 in Yiddish, five
in French and the rest in
eight other languages.
Towards the end of the
19th Century political
Zionism provided the great
impetus. Before and during
the last World War, Jewish
papers in countries under
Nazi occupation were
banned but immediately
after the liberation, even in
concentration camps, new
publications appeared.
They increased in par-
ticular after the establish-
ment of the State of Israel.
The number of publica-
tions in the Diaspora has
become more or less stable.
But it continues to grow in
Israel.
The family of Jewish
newspapers in the
Diaspora today consists of
620 members (12 dailies,
140 weeklies, 49 bi-
weeklies, 226 monthlies
and 193 periodicals).
Eighty years ago only
three periodicals appeared
in Jerusalem. Today some
500 newspapers are
published in Israel.
Josef Fraenkel authored
historical records, The Jewish
Press of the World which ap-
peared in seven editions, the
last in 1972.
The reproduced issue of the
Jewish Journalist has a list of
the famous journalists who
formed the Syndicate of
Zionists, Journalists and
Writers. There were two I had
especially befriended: Jacob
de Haas, who started as
editor of the Jewish World of
London and later, as editor of
the Boston Jewish Advocate,
had inspired Louis D.
Brandeis to become an active
Zionist; and Nahum Sokolow,
who was publisher of Hazefira
of Warsaw and later became
president of the World Zionist
Organization.
I write with pride in having
a role in the history of Jewish
journalism.

French Yeshivas
Get U.S. Funds

Washington (JTA) — Ozar
Hatorah, a New York-based
Jewish educational organiza-
tion, will receive $8 million in
U.S. federal funds to build
yeshivas in and around Paris,
primarily for Jewish refugees,
the organization said last
week.
The expenditure, opposed
by the State Department, was
sponsored as an amendment
to the $600 billion 1988 spen-
ding authorization bill by
Sen. Daniel Inouye.
